The Swedish retro-doom-psych-folk band known as Witchcraft was started in 2000 by vocalist/guitarist Magnus Pelander, whose original intent was to record a single in tribute to Pentagram's Bobby Liebling and Roky Erickson -- how often does that happen? Calling on his friend John Hoyles (guitar) and brothers Ola (bass) and Jens Henriksson (drums) to lend a hand, Pelander did indeed record that single (entitled "No Angel or Demon") and released it through small independent Primitive Arts Records in 2002. Then, encouraged by the results, he continued to compose material for Witchcraft while his bandmates pursued other interests.
A year would pass before they reconvened as Witchcraft, and with new drummer Jonas Arnesen in tow, the quartet began preparing their eponymous debut album for release through Rise Above the following year. Recorded in a basement studio outfitted exclusively with vintage equipment, the album captured a hauntingly authentic 1970s sound -- steeped not only in the heavy-handed work of Black Sabbath and Pentagram, but also in the psych and folk-rock elements of obscure acts like Leaf Hound, Captain Beyond, and Comus. And yet, ironically, none of the members of Witchcraft were even born before 1977, making their loving reconstruction of that decade's music -- underground music at that -- all the more remarkable. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi
How is it that there are several bands named "Witchcraft"? Is there not some kind of copyright infringement here?

Eerily authentic proto-doom sound, quite indistinguishable from their progenitors. The songwriting on 'Witchcraft', moreover, is above average and it moves forward with a grinding type of terrible certainty. Strong band and a win for fans of this brand of hard rock, like me.
Wow, Angel of Anarchy and I can agree on a band. I really like these guys. Dirty, chunky guitars reminiscent of 70's metal makes for some good music and a desire to smoke something psychedelic and grow sideburns. Nice. It also seems that Willow is still posturing about true metal. What a douche. Gdubb, your argument is probably used on every page willow visits and still the nonsensical statement finds a way to mar the surface of those pages like graffiti painted with sh*t.
Are you guys seriously comparing Witchcraft and other like-minded retro doom/sludge metal outfits to freaking Godsmack? Might as well compare the Monkees to the Beatles and Sean Paul to Bob Marley while you're at it...

In short - Pentagram -> Withcraft : Alice in Chains -> Godsmack. Getting its infleunce from an actual metal band as opposed to an alternative band, it would be safe to say Withcraft is more metal than Godsmack. This is not to say neither bands are metal. I listen to both bands. I do not see how someone can say one band is better than another because it is more (or less) 'metal.' If you don't like them just say it and get it over with, no need to troll.

Godsmack isn't really 'true metal.' It is a border between hardrock and nu-metal. They got a lot of influence from Alice in Chains, an alternative band. Witcraft on the other hand is traditional doom metal meets stoner rock, something that they got from Pentagram, a doom metal band. In fact they started out doing Pentagram covers.
My favorite "new find" of this year. I feel dumb for not knowing about them sooner - they're amazing. Can't wait to see them live. Best representation of classic stoner metal that...oh, wait, I just read Willow Wonka's comment - apparently Witchcraft are not as good as Godsmack, who I hate, so I guess Witchcraft probably sucks. Too bad. I was so sure that I really dug them. Shows what I know about my own musical tastes. Thanks Wonka for setting me straight...
