Once called "The Dean of African-American composers," William Grant Still (1895-1978) started out as an arranger for dance orchestras while he continued to study serious composition with Edgard Varèse and George Whitefield Chadwick. Still's Symphony No. 1, the "Afro-American" (1931) swiftly established his reputation as America's most prominent black classical composer. Still answered it with a vast catalogue, consisting of operas, orchestral works, chamber music, children's piece and a number of socially conscious vocal works. However, Still felt shut out from New York's classical establishment owing to race, particularly after the lukewarm critical reception of his opera Troubled Island in 1949. ~ Uncle Dave Lewis , Rovi
