Why?

One of the more indie rock acts on the usually hip-hop-leaning label Anticon, the indefinable Why? come from the Oakland Bay area. The genre-blending band came to the revered label because of main man Yoni Wolf's college friendship with Anticon artist Doseone. The enigmatic Split was their first release for the label in 2002 and was followed a year later by Oaklandazulasylum. Both the Sanddollars EP and the full-length Elephant Eyelash appeared in 2005. The following year the Rubber Traits EP came out, and in 2008, Alopecia hit shelves. Eskimo Snow followed in 2009 and featured Mark Erickson along with Fog's Andrew Broder. The title for their 2012 effort Mumps, Etc. was inspired by contracting the disease while in Europe, along with other "on tour" calamities. In 2013 the conceptual Golden Tickets EP materialized, a seven song collection of personalized tracks crafted by Wolf for seven individual Why? fans he'd internet stalked over the course of several months. ~ David Jeffries

I've been a fan for several years, and I got to see them twice in 2013. The lyrics remind me of Neutral Milk Hotel in that they are original and evoke certain emotions that are hard to describe.

why? is one of the many reasons why metal doesnt appeal to me anymore. they are the reason i decided to become a better musician. if you ever see them live youll understand exactly what i mean by musicianship . yoni and josiah alike are fantastic. anticon is also just supreme. thank you why? for showing me a piece of who i was. without you it mightve been too late to find him.

Sara Helsinger, they are from Oakland, moved to Cincinatti in the late 00's I think, like 2008.If you listen to the music closely there's lots and lots of Oakland references. I mean goodness they have an album called Oaklandazula s y l u m .

I could not get with this music. Still, I am glad to see that there is an appreciation for their music. I could not vibe with anything, the vocals, the music just did not cut it for me.
