Formed after Propagandhi member John K. Samson got the itch to perform and record again after taking a sabbatical to write and start a publishing company, the Winnipeg-based Weakerthans took Samson's music in a completely different direction. Propagandhi had been known for powerful, speedy punk and overtly political lyrics, but the Weakerthans went down a more melodic and introspective path. Consisting of Red Fisher drummer Jason Tait and bassist John Sutton, the Weakerthans took their name from a line from the film adaptation of Marguerite Duras' The Lover: "Go ahead, I'm weaker than you can possibly imagine." The band prided itself on its high standards, both as political beings (shying away from large label or distribution contracts because of their connection to exploitation) and in their personal lives (promoting vegetarianism) and received critical praise for their debut album, Fallow, which was issued in 1998 on a co-operative label, G7& Welcoming Records. With the added presence of guitarist Steve Carroll, the group's second full-length, Left and Leaving, was issued in early 2000 and the Watermark EP followed a year later. By 2003, the band found a deal with Epitaph and issued Reconstruction Site, their breakthrough album. Soon after, however, Sutton left the Weakerthans, only to be replaced with bassist/keyboardist Greg Smith, and in 2007 the band released the fourth album in their ten-year tenure, Reunion Tour. ~ Stacia Proefrock, Rovi
the weakerthans make such beautiful, melodic music, I sometimes forget that some of them were part of Propaghandi (also amazing but in a totally different way)
Cant stop listening... I discovered The Weakerthans cause they were suggested when I was listening to Paul Westerberg on Pandora. Id say they are now in my top 10 favorite bands of all time.
John K. Sampson is easily in my top 5 best songwriters. Others in this group would be Elliott Smith, Doug Martsch from Built to Spill, Ben Gibbard and Jeff Tweedy.
Overall Left and Leaving is my favorite, however, they all capture me depending on my mood. "Sun in an Empty Room" from Reunion Tour is one of my favorite songs.
One of my favorite bands of all times, Propagandhi died (in my opinion)when Samson left. However he spawned something much more amazing. Have been a fan for years. The songs are always relevant, and always brings your memory back to something, or someone, that almost undoubtedly brings a tear and a smile.
Well well, finally more people listening to this pure gold post-punk. I have to say that I really liked Reconstruction Site the best. It's just got this tired and weary vibe to it. It just resonates with me, maybe it reminds me of coming home from work. These guys are the perfect for an after-party, just to mellow out and reflect on what has happened during hectic days. And now I'm rambling on like an old man.

I saw them years back at the Fireside Bowl in Chicago. Side note, Yellow Card opened for them and an old European punk band started the night. During their show the Weakerthans called up fans to play with them. The fans ended up taking over the song and none of them knew each other. By far the coolest thing I ever saw at a concert.
Left and Leaving is by and far my favorite album. I enjoy Reunion Tour, but it just can't touch L&L. My Favorite Chords is phenomenal. Who else can get away with writing about bulldozers having feelings??
I'd go with Left and Leaving and Reconstruction Site as my top 2 Weakerthans albums. Reunion Tour can be a bit hard to take. However, I've seen these guys 3 times now, and they are amazing live. In Buffalo, a few years back, they played almost their full catalog, though John said he didn't remember how to play Maryland Bridge when I requested it.
My girl got me into these guys, little did I know the overstated fact about Samson of Propaghandi = Samson of The Weakerthans... Funny that my tastes changed and the artist did too.

Fallow was fine, but that was them just trying to gain a voice after propaghandi. The middle two, Left & Leaving and Reconstruction Site, is when you get to hear the true talent. They have their voice and they use it proudly. Reunion Tour only keeps up the talent. All in all, my favorite band

Weird that so many people are responding that the first two albums are their favorites. I've only heard the later two, and love them, so perhaps I should give the others a try soon.
I agree...Left and Leaving and Fallow are far superior to Reconstruction Site and Reunion Tour. I just can't get into them. The Weakerthans are in my top 10.
I heard these guys on my Lodger station. Sounds good. I am not as creative of a writer as 'ickesk' down there.

My love of Fallow and Left and Leaving is unwavering and eternal; whenever a chill comes to the air the Weakerthans undoubtedly find their way to my stereo. However, after falling so in love with those albums and wearing them out for so many years, Reconstruction Site and Reunion Tour just don't do it for me in the same way... They are still good, but for me they lack something integral to the perfection achieved on the first two albums. Anyone feeling me here?
Best band EVER!!! I was listening to them before Pandora, and decided to add them to my radio. I think this band could be my most favorite band ever. Just listen to it, plain and simple, nearly every song on every album is enjoyable

Some of the best lyrics I've ever heard. The song Reconstruction Site explains the world we live in so perfectly without actually explaining anything.
"Like OMG..these guys are like so groundbreaking to me because unlike Antiflag which like are totally lame, these guys are real like me cuz like OMG i've got stars in my eyeballs."
Propaghandi was sick as Hell, but I think dude got sick of writing college hackey sack player's bumper stickers and just wanted to have fun. Not political, just perfect music to raid thrift stores too.
A friend recommended The Weakerthans to me and I fell in love with them. The first song I ever listened to was The Reasons and it's one of my favorites. (Hospital Vespers) is an amazing song, but then so are all the rest.
OMG I am the first one to comment on this very important punk band?! The Weakerthans are important because unlike Anti Flag and other political punk bands that go on and on about anarchy, the Weakerthans focus on the old weatherd punk activist that has seen more than their fair share of marches gone wrong and has actually participated in the process. The Weakerthans show us that politics are more than just bomb chucking and slogan shouting.

I wanted to go to see them.
