The Waifs

Originally performing Bob Dylan covers in and around bars in their native Australia, the sister duo of Vicki and Donna Simpson were known as COLOURS. Formed in 1992 and touring constantly in their homeland, the pair hooked up with Josh Cunningham during a stop in August 1992. A year later, they changed their name to the WAiFS. From there, the group released a cassette of original material but decided to head for Melbourne, the mecca of Australian music. A loyal following and hectic touring pace resulted in three albums, the self-titled debut in May 1996 and 1998's "Shelter Me." Folk festivals across the United States and Canada also fell in love with their sweet harmonies and self-described "wholemeal" music. They have also shared the stage with such artists as Kasey Chambers and Michelle Shocked. In 2001, the band released their third album, Sink or Swim in Australia, but it didn't arrive in America until the following year. The Waifs' musical honesty was captured once again with the follow-up Up All Night in Spring 2003. Two years later the (mostly) live double-disc A Brief History... came out, followed in 2007 by Sun Dirt Water. ~ Jason MacNeil, Rovi

love em!
I have LOVED the Waifs for years!!! First song played on radio was Lighthouse. Ohh, man fell in love.
Hey, cool stuff!
Good stuff!
Common thread seems to be those who have seen them live love them without reserve. Count me in that category! Quite the treat live...doesn t necessarily transfer to tape.
Odd, no one mentioned that they toured with Bob Dylan in '01 or '02. Come on guys, if you're going to produce a bio, it should be the important points. I mean, Kasey Chambers.... o o h ahh!
They performed a tremendous show in Charleston, SC....with Dylan in 2001-ish.
Saw Vicky play harmonica for Toby at the Torrey Redrocks Women's Festival last weekend and am now a huge fan of the Waifs!
love love them !! come back to Arcata, Ca. we love you
Do they still perform?

Followed them around Australia when I lived there, and seen them multiple times since I've been back in the states. They were instant favorites the first time I hear them.
my 1st time! I agree w/ all below!!
I'm a fan

One of my favorite bands of all time!
Have I not loved this group before? They are SO dear! Have I been missing them ALL THIS TIME??? Sweet voices!
A major reason I like them is their free and somewhat rough delivery. There voices are perfect in that way.
When are they coming to Vermont? We have great venues.

One of the best bands in my opinion. They rock in the studio and even more live!

This trio makes me glad that I Believe.

Seen them a few times in Boston - they put on a great show! If you have a chance to see them - GO!!!
Just introduced to them....... I like it!

I've seen them several times, too, and yes, they do rock! Vicki plays an amazing harmonica. I feel that their vocals are pretty unique when you really listen to them in comparison to all those others they might normally be compared to. I saw them with Paul Kelley, the "Bob Dylan" of Australia, and they were all amazing, and they OPENED for Paul! Not the other way around. This group (and yes, they are a group, not studio musicians) is wonderful and I hope everyone gets a chance to listen to them,
kirsypoo_bea r
I've seen them three times and they ROCK! They ARE the musicians...
nice...sweet sound

I'm way more impressed with the musicians... . d o e s anyone know if they are credited with being in the band or are they studio musicians? Not to knock the vocals but I could put the voices in a basket with KT Tinsdall and shake'm up and not really care who was singing. They're good. Just too same.

What a treat to listen to!

I wouldn't really put them in the indigo Girls category. More like the Indigo Girls meet Bonnie Raitt. More soulful and deeper, with less angst and a rougher edge.

I haven't heard all of their stuff yet, but I would agree with the Indigo Girls somparison. As far as the accuracy of the existing list of Similar Artists, I think its pretty good myself, though I do see Alison Krauss and Union Station as a bit of a stretch, but that might be because her voice is so distinctive, or perhaps their rigid style.
Similar Artists. I'd have to say The Indigo Girls. Love the harmonies.
great sounds and real original music love their authenticity !
waifmail
This is my all time favorite band! Give them a good chance and you won't be disappointed .

I don't think their similar artists section is very accurate at all though...

Saw The Waifs for the first time in Seattle at The Triple Door in March 08. Incredible musicians, tight harmonies, great songs. Can't wait for them to come back to the West Coast!
I like them more with every passing day!
