Voivod

Voivod (singer Denis "Snake" Belanger, guitarist Denis "Piggy" d'Amour, drummer Michel "Away" Langevin, and bassist Jean-Yves "Blacky" Theriault) were one of the first thrash bands from Canada to gain popularity outside of their home country. From their beginnings in the early '80s, their main goal was to be different from anyone else, and thus they incorporated odd musical tempos and futuristic story lines into their songs, often dealing with technology taking over the world. With their unique style of performing and writing, Voivod opened the way for other Canadian thrash and metal bands.

Such early releases as 1984's War and Pain and 1986's Rrröööaaarrr showed that the quartet was aligned with the then up-and-coming thrash metal movement (Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax), eventually letting their prog rock influences (Pink Floyd, Rush, King Crimson) seep in on 1987's Killing Technology and 1988's Dimension Hatröss. By the time of their major-label debut for MCA, 1989's Nothingface, Voivod had perfected their thrash metal/prog rock style, resulting in the most commercially successful release of their career -- spearheaded by a video for their cover of Pink Floyd's "Astronomy Domine" (which enjoyed airings on MTV's Headbangers Ball) and a headlining club tour over a pair of bands that would soon change the landscape of alt-rock by the early '90s, Soundgarden and Faith No More.

But just as it appeared that Voivod might be able to break through to a wider audience, Theriault left the group right after the release of 1991's Angel Rat, as the album quickly sank from sight while the rest of the rock world focused its attention on the burgeoning alt-rock/Seattle movement. The Outer Limits followed two years later, followed shortly thereafter by Belanger's exit from the band. By the mid-'90s, Voivod's lineup had been scaled down to a trio -- newcomer Eric Forrest doubled on vocals and bass, resulting in such releases as 1995's Negatron and 1997's Phobos. The odds-and-ends compilation Kronik and the live set Lives saw release in 2000. In early 2001, the remaining members decided to call it a day when Forrest departed. The band reunited later that year with Belanger back on board; they also enlisted a new bassist, Jason Newsted, formerly of Metallica, resulting in the eponymous Voivod album.

In August of 2005, guitarist "Piggy" d'Amour succumbed to complications from colon cancer. The band was in the middle of recording a new album; on his deathbed, he instructed his bandmates on how to complete his contributions to the band's forthcoming offering, Katorz, which arrived in 2006. Piggy left numerous songs and arrangements for another album on his laptop. In 2009, Voivod took those demos, guitar parts, and arrangements and structured the album Infini from them, without editing, re-recording, or overdubbing his guitar. The band toured the album across Europe, Japan, and North America with Martyr's Daniel Mongrain on guitar. A 2009 show at Montreal's Club Soda featuring members Belanger, Langevin, Mongrain, and (returning) bassist "Blacky" Theriault, was recorded; it was eventually released as Warriors of Ice on Sonic Union Metal in 2011. Voivod released their thirteenth studio album, Target Earth, in January of 2013. ~ John Book & Greg Prato, Rovi

The early stuff is great, it's true... but Target Earth might be their best album ever. I fail to understand why people don't appreciate genius... oh wait, that's right...

Please put RRROOOAAARRR and Nothingface, Outer Limits, and Angel Rat on Pandora! THOSE ARE THEIR BEST ALBUMS-- AND YOU DON'T HAVE THEM!!! :'(
I can't believe Pandora doesn't have RRROOOAAARRR , which is not only VoiVod's best album, but one of the greatest thrash albums EVER! An amazing, half-mad adventure in audial brutality! I was painfully disappointed in everything that came after that, but War and Pain and RRROOOAAARRR are must-haves for any thrash fan.
WARRIORS OF ICEEEEEEE!!!
their early stuff is the balls !!!!!!
always thought they were a great band and heavily underrated. they can be hardcore, punk, metal, thrash...wha t e v e r . . . j u s t a great band
civildragon
They are missing a lot of essential Voivod stuff, such as their two greatest Nothingface and Angel Rat. They are also missing Rrrroooooaaa r r r ! , Phobos, Negatron, and The Outer Limits.

The beauty about thi band is their ability to play bizarre and interesting time signatures. The drummer is quite inventive
YEAH PANDORA is good but they also are good at ignoring you also. They all should be included.
I requested that Pandora add the albums Nothingface, Angel Rat, and The Outer Limits quite some time ago. I consider them the finest work by Voivod, and among the finest metal albums period.
I agree with everyone else regarding discography. Nothingface and Dimension Hatross are my favorites. They are easily one of the most under-rated progressive metal bands out there. Anyone who can cover Floyd and create concept albums in the metal genre as well as they did deserve much more respect than they're getting here.
Angel Rat is there best album, that and The Outer limits
I'm still pissed their discography hasn't been fluffed up a bit. Quite a disservice to metal fans. This band has been underrated their entire career. DESPITE putting out a couple albums (Nothingface and Dimension Hatross) that SHAME about 98% of other metal bands. Very few bands from their peak (1987-1992is h ) could keep up w/these dudes.
It's absolutely criminal that Nothingface isn't here. Not only their best album, but among the quintessenti a l prog metal albums of all time. Angel Rat and Outer Limits were weaker by comparison but it would be nice to have them available too.

Angel Rat is missing as well. Voivod had 14 albums in their discography the last I counted. There could be some that I'm missing though. This sight has really cut them short, leaving out some of their best material. Voivod was one of the best bands ever!
VACUMMM YOURSELVES IN THIS IS CANADA AT IT BEST . OR SHOULD I SAY JUAN CURE CRAPIDA WHO CARES SNAKE YOUR IT I MSSED PIGGY BUT REMEMBER IM YOUR BIGGEST FAN IN CLEVE OH BACK IN THE DAY WE PULLED YOU MISS YOU GUYS VEY WELL..,.L.
why isn't outer limits listed here?
Nothingface. . . . . b e s t album ever
war and pain you all this band has changed my life back in the early eighties, the were just so killer , that thats it
Steprous: I agree! "Nothingface " is one of my favorite albums by any band of any genre. Every song is good and all the lyrics are interesting. This page is selling this band VERY short! I saw the original lineup in 1992 and they BLEW ME AWAY!. Still one of the best performances i've ever seen. Every song was note for note, but not stiff. and hearing "Astronomy Domine" live (played perfectly) was one of the highlights of my concert going experiences.
I VE FOLLOWED THIS BAND SINCE DAY ONE . THE GUITARIST PIGGY HAS PASSED AWAY AND WILL BE MISSED . KATORS Has JASON NEWSTED ON BASS FROM METTALICA . ENJOY ............ . .
Why don't you have their album Nothingface? it's their best one by far!!
RRRRRRRRRRR! ! ! ! ! ! !
