Part clever concept, part exaggerated camp act, the Village People were worldwide sensations during disco's heyday and keep reviving like the phoenix. Producer Jacques Morali in 1977 assembled a group designed to attract gay audiences while parodying (some claimed exploiting) that same constituency's stereotypes. Songwriters Phil Hurtt and Peter Whitehead were tabbed to compose songs with gay underpinnings, and roles and costumes were carefully selected; among them were a cowboy, biker, soldier, policeman, and construction worker complete with hard hat. The group clicked first in England with the single "San Francisco (You Got Me)" in 1977, then reaped stateside honors with "Macho Man" in 1978. "Y.M.C.A." and "In the Navy" were worldwide smashes, both peaking at number two on the pop charts. After two more successful singles, "Go West" and "Can't Stop the Music," the group's fortunes plummeted, in large part due to their participation in the ill-fated film also titled Can't Stop the Music. ~ Ron Wynn, Rovi
Who would have thought that a campy gay song would be so popular at straight weddings...just goes to show how gay leads the way while others just follow
My brother actually liked The Village People, our cousin for his birthday bought him an album since he liked their music so much.....I never get tired of their music.....
I agree with anytime I hear of anyone serving in the Navy such as my brother,he's retired now,but that song does happen to stick in my mind In The Navy......
I remember going to the skating rink in the early 80's and doing the YMCA motions out on the rink. Every skate party had to have YMCA at some point. I still do the hand gestures occasionally when that song comes on the radio.

OMg The Village people are so so dreamy i love them my name is jordan and i want to run a train on them, it would be so so amazing
I love the village people, though most of my peers have never heard of them(i'm 14). Thier best song is "in the navy", but the others are awesome, too.
Everytime someone tells me they were in the Navy I still have that song in the back of my mind. I exercise at the YMCA and that song seems to be in every teacher's recordings for every class I take there no matter what it's for complete with the hand gestures! They laughed at themselves before anyone else got the chance. They broke through all the social barriers which was difficult to do back then and now.
