Velvet Revolver began with a spring 2002 jam session that reunited ex-Guns N' Roses bandmates Slash (guitar), Duff McKagan (bass), and Matt Sorum (drums) on-stage. With the discovery that their chemistry was still going strong, the trio began pushing around some new music and auditioning singers for what became known as "the Project." Early entries included ex-Buckcherry shouter Josh Todd and Neurotica's Kelly Shaefer; both became acquainted with the cutting room floor. By early 2003, the existence of "the Project" -- and its quest for a singer -- was common knowledge, so much so that VH1 sent cameras to document the search. Dave Kushner (Wasted Youth, Dave Navarro) also joined up as second guitarist. Troubled STP-er Scott Weiland came on board next. He and the band clicked immediately and recorded a hyper piece of glitter metal for the Hulk soundtrack called "Set Me Free." By June, "the Project" had been renamed Velvet Revolver, and Weiland was officially made its lead singer, though possession charges stemming from a May bust were still outstanding. The band signed a deal with RCA and spent the rest of 2003 fitting in gigs and recording sessions around Weiland's court-ordered rehab. RCA next announced an April 2004 release for Contraband, Velvet Revolver's full-length debut; the date was then pushed to May, and finally to June. That spring, Weiland labored through court dates and recovery as Slash and Duff did advance press for Contraband, and fan anticipation for the album grew. VR also released the single "Slither," a rabid, ambitious rocker guided by Slash's signature guitar sound. The single sidled steadily up the active rock charts, and when Contraband finally dropped, it was to general appreciation for its mix of STP and GNR signatures and its surprising turn toward hedonistic maturity. Velvet Revolver's sophomore effort, Libertad, followed in 2007. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi
I agree with Iron4clay. Josh Todd of Buckcherry seems like would be a great fit. Although I really dig VR with Weiland, Josh comes from a closer place to GNR than Weiland.
If VR can't get back together with Weiland then they should get Myles Kennedy, especially after Duff, Slash and Kennedy had such great chemistry at the RN'R HOF Induction Ceremony
Fantastic albeit short term effort. The chemistry is outstanding if Scott Weiland could leave the chemicals alone for a while. I would rather see VR return rather than GNR.
Great Band!!! Solid stuff . miss them. :( new STP is unlistenable.

temple n roses= kinda bums me out to know this kind of great plain old rock with some balls is over- f' nu metal and whatever the embyos are being spoon fed and called music-

Slash, Weiland and ex-GNR band-mates have chemistry. Make it permanent.
Scott, Slash & the boys... love it!!! 'Com back dudes- bring us some mo!!!

Yeah I agree I hope they bring this band back. It only lasted a short time and it already was producing songs that were way better than anything GnRs every has produced without Slash.
Slither (STP song thru and thru)...where's another hit that Velvet Revolver made ?
bradleytronsgard
sounds a little like guns and roses there good i like the music

It's difficult to find newer bands who not only write good lyrics, but have the raw instrumental talent to back it up. They are few and far between especially in the rock world.
cdillon1977
That's a very elitist viewpoint you have there, Tim Lea. I'm not a musician, but I think I have the right to say SLASH ROCKS and is one of the top-ten guitarists of all time.
@burgoschris83 That's great that GNR is your favorite band and Axl IS the voice of GNR. Just one problem...you're on the VELVET REVOLVER page. And GNR never broke up, you tard, Axl fired everybody. He's a one-man-band now. We would all like to see the original line-up again, but that's highly unlikely, so quit your b**ching.
@Matt Leonard WTF have you been smoking? Velvet Revolver isn't the new GNR. GNR is the new GNR. They are a timeless and irreplaceable band.

I've played drums since 5th grade. Love every minute of playing them still. Velvet Revolver was the reason I picked up guitar, my first riff was Slither and my first full song was Fall to Pieces. I play more guitar than drums now. I think these guys have some amazing songs. Velvet Revolver is the new GNR.

Wish Weiland to keep him out of trouble long enough to get something solid going. I really like this sound.
I find it funny that people always seek out something to whine about instead of finding something they like and commenting there....hint hint.
HORRIBLE, very horrible......i love guns n roses,it my favorite band.but this band is garbage.gnr should have never broke up.the singer is horrible.Axl rose is the voice of gnr.
tlea96
sawyer...you're a nitwit for that comment; "Slash is the least talented...". Guess that's why Lenny Kravitz, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson, etc, etc ask him to play on their records...What a stupid thing to say. Non-musicians shouldn't be able to voice an opinion about a musician's playing. You probably think Good Charlotte is made up of solid musicians. It's too bad Scott couldn't get the demon off his back. This band was a good collaboration..Looking forward to Slash's solo album due out next m
Hey "Good Shephard", go screw yourself with a spoon. Don't go posting crap like that on a bands page, keep it to yourself or rant about it on some other page.
No, Slash is and the guys from GnR are the most talented. While it's true that what Slash does isn't inherently difficult, it's his style and his history that makes him popular. Weiland is a very talented individual he just wasn't working out with the guys. I'm sure once Slash finishes his solo album that they will start the search for another singer equally talented.
I love contraband, its a much better then a lotta new albums. Hell Libertad was better then Chinese Democracy. I kinda like of Velvet Revolver more then GnR. Weiland's voice sounds better which the overall sound of the music
you know, i'll be honest. i never even knew that this was a mixture of STP and GnR. of course, i also never caught on that Audioslave was Soundgarden plus Rage.
dont give a s**t what you all say, i loved this band. great musicians, great singer ... and ya, some singers are replacable, but for me replacing scott weiland is the end of this one. the trio of scott, slash, and duff is what got me into it. take out any of those and its not doing it for me anymore. saw them twice and scott put on a great show both times. i did hear some awful things tho bout other shows. shouldve stayed off the drugs scott!on the flip side, f**kin stoked stp got back together!
rpower1996
They already have douchbag!
rpower1996
Velvet revolver is amazing the only reason they might seem horrible to a retard like angels of anarchy is because Scott Weiland was high in almost every performance.
dlsdewitt
you know any who dislikes this band is in mourn for axel f***ing rose. get over it. he sucked. gnr was good. but axel sucked

HOWEVER.
