Vast

VAST is comprised of one man and one man only: Jon Crosby. The songwriter grew up in Humboldt County, CA, and was profiled as a promising guitarist in Guitar Player Magazine at the age of 13. He was nearly signed to the guitar-based label Shrapnel, but he turned down the offer and focused on honing his songwriting chops instead. Crosby soon left high school to do home study, and he began assembling a band in order to perform some demos he recorded all by himself, under the name VAST. Although he was able to play shows, the band proved to be a revolving door of members, with Crosby serving as the frontman and focal point.

VAST's material was original, as it encompassed elements of industrial/alternative (in the vein of Nine Inch Nails) and ambient music, with unpredictable samples added. One such demo started to receive heavy airplay on a local radio station, leading to a major-label bidding war. VAST eventually signed to Elektra and released the debut album Visual Audio Sensory Theater in mid-1998. At the time of its release, auditions for a backing band for a subsequent tour were under way. Two years later, Crosby hooked up with producer Blumpy and assembled a band comprising guitarist Justin Cotta, bassist Thomas Froggatt, and drummer Steve Clark to create the 2000 release Music for People. Although "Free" gained some popularity as a single, Music for People only enjoyed modest success, and Elektra dropped the band soon after its release.

VAST returned in 2004 with Nude, the band's third studio album (and first to be released via 2Blossoms, VAST's own indie record label). A Complete Demonstration followed in 2005, collecting the band's early demo material onto one disc, while the double-disc Turquoise & Crimson appeared one year later. Jon Crosby then began embracing acoustic music, releasing a series of recordings that featured little more than his vocals and acoustic guitar. April introduced that scaled-back approach in 2007, followed by a series of acoustic EPs. Material from those EPs later found its way onto VAST's 2009 album, Me & You, which featured a full band expanding upon the intimate source material. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

vast is hauntingly moving I love everything He does. There is a dark sadness to it, but that just makes it more perfect. I deeply look forward to more works from this genius.

My wedding party traveled down the aisle to Lady of Dreams by VAST.
Take Me With You has become one of my favorite songs to write to. A Thank You will definitely be in the book I'm currently working on .
Vast is Amazing. I had the honor of having Jon Crosby sing to me in my car after a show and chilled with all members of the band. I actually keep in contact with Manny (photographe r / l i g h t s techie)! They are amazing people and make amazing music! You have to see them live! It's worth every penny!
Love love love VAST!! Walked down the aisle to an instrumental of flames! LOVE everything they have done previously & can't wait for a new album!!
I heard free on the radio way back. I cut the neighbors grass just to get money to ride my bike to the store an buy the album. I'm not 27 and still love each individual song by crosby. Very unique.
Nice to see others feel so passionate about this band. I've seen Jon and the other members live, twice in Austin and once in San Antonio. The first time in Austin when April was released-- #1 show ever for me! all acoustic in a super small very intimate venue. I love all of jon's sounds. From his root electronica sound to the more folk acoustic sound. He's an artist that is constantly evolving and is doing it so beautifully. Does anyone know if jon still lives in seattle? heading that way in the
Great Music.

My husband introduced me to VAST and I'll be forever grateful. My favorite album is still 1998's V.A.S.T. LOVE VAST!!! Give me more, pretty please! :-)

VAST is epic. Magnificent. No two ways about it. - I love it all but Music for People is still my favorite album. Put Free on repeat, I'm good to go.

This bio is actually deceptive. While the band started with just Jon, it has evolved over time into a full band with members like Michael Cry having influence on their music. Jon is still the amazing visionary, but you can't discount the other members!
Vast is the greatest band that most have never heard of. It is a shame that the masses have not heard this band. John is a visionary who reaches for new ground with each new song. Long Live VAST
been a fan for ages, seen Him twice in Phoenix-Temp e . I wish he would do more stuff similar to his first album but I always find gems in every release he does.
I saw Vast at the highline Ballroom NYC twice! It rocked.
Saw them live a few years ago at the Machine Shop in Flint--they were awesome. Enjoyed the opening bands too. Too bad Flint is so scary...
Love VAST! I would die to see live.
How do you upload a photo of yourself here on PANDORA.com? ! ?
I saw VAST in Flint at the Machine Shop as well, back in 2007 or so--Jon Crosby sounded sick that night but everyone who's seen them at other times says they put on an amazing show. Still my favorite band, either way. <3
VAST is one of my favorites. Been a fan since i first saw the music video for "Pretty When You Cry." All of his music is excellent, but nothing will ever replace his first album.
I like April. Yeah, it's different, but who cares? It's just another good sound. I hope he revisits his old sound as well, though.
Vast is awesome! They also put on a great show when I saw them in Flint at The Machine Shop. I love his voice. I like the more "dance-ier" tracks on the first album, but he always makes great songs.

I agree with the last several comments. I started listening to VAST with the release of the first album and really enjoyed that sound. That said, I appreciate how they have explored different areas and progressed throughout the years. It opened up my musical taste a bit. If you would have told me VAST would have a song like "FROG" back in '98 I probably wouldn't have believed you. Recently, I really like the Big Band Sixxx stuff Jon did and hope that is the kind of sound they get back to.
arguably the most unique-sound i n g rock'n'roll formula of all time. "The Last One Alive", "The Niles Edge", "Thats My Boy", "Dedicate A Place For Me","Lost", "I'm Dying", "You Shouldve Known Id Leave", "Sunday I'll Be Gone", "Winter In My Heart", and "Be With Me" are all equally great starting points for first-time listeners.
Vastly talented.

I hope Jon goes back to the sounds he had in the beginning - the wonderful, rich, eclectic mix of intense and unexpected elements that were "scaled back" in his latest releases. His vocals are great, but it's the blend of all the sounds in Visual Audio Sensory Theater, Music for People, and Nude that really do it for me. One of the best musicians of all time!
Found VAST recently and can not get enough of anything he does. original, amazing!
I wish he would come back more to music from the people. he has all these things going I did like nude or the 2 eps that made the album, and a few from april but hes going his own way now and I guess im not their yet. Seen him live 3 times. This guy and Clann Zu are the most original artists ive heard in some time.

this dude r0x!!!!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
The best band and musician by far!!
Yes a wonderful band indeed
God I love this band so much.
i like it. pop-goth!

Wow. I feel terrible for not knowing this band like...10 years ago!! Thank you Pandora!!!
Seeing Jon perform live....ther e s not much better except meeting Ronan Harris & Mark Jackson of VNV, altho Jon was cool to meet as well.
I'm saddened that it sounded so much better when I was a little teenage pothead :P It doesn't get through to me as much now. It used to really blow me away.

one of the few bands i can say i like every album from
wilma1966

Been following Jon since 1999 and he has never disappointed me, at any shows or any album. He's a true artist and years ahead of his time, if you like what you hear here, please buy his albums. Unlike other artists, he sells them online for under 6$ for full length yet, he deserves so much more for his work.

I have been going through a tough time in my life in recent months "digging in the dirt" as Peter Gabriel says. I find that this music resonates with my seemingly omnipresent anger and discontent.
Jon Crosby is very talented and, alas, relatively unknown it seems in general. He has superb skill with numerous instruments and a distinct voice that is often haunting and full of intensity. I cannot understand why he hasn't had more radio play and "commercial success". I really love the songs, "Turquoise", "Lost" and "Thrown Away". At least I've been able to introduce VAST albums to my friends and family, and they all unanimously think they're unique and spectacular.
he wasted his talent on skill not noteriaty . good job very oORINAL

Whew!!!!
VAST = catharsis
Once again I love Pandora, so many treats found while I'm sitting at work. Great sound, I want to hear more.

I feel like VAST has been one of music's best kept secrets for the last ten years.
