Vangelis

Best known for his lush, Oscar-winning score to the 1981 film Chariots of Fire, Vangelis was among the most successful and admired electronic composers of his era. Born Evangelos Odyssey Papathanassiou in Volos, Greece on March 29, 1943, his nascent musical talent was recognized at an early age, but he refused to take piano lessons, instead teaching himself. After high school he formed the early-'60s pop group Formynx, soon the most popular act in Greece. After achieving stardom at home, Vangelis relocated to Paris in 1968, and was in France at the time of the student riots; unable to go back home, he formed the progressive rock band Aphrodite's Child with fellow Greek expatriates Demis Roussos and Lucas Sideras, soon scoring a major European hit with the single "Rain and Tears."

After Aphrodite's Child disbanded in 1972, Vangelis joined French filmmaker Frederic Rossif to compose the scores for the features L'Apocalypse des Animaux and La Fete Sauvage; his proper solo debut, Earth, followed in 1974, around the time he was rumored to be joining Yes. Although Vangelis did rehearse with Yes for a few weeks, he never officially joined their ranks; still, he became close friends with group vocalist Jon Anderson, a frequent collaborator in the years to follow. Relocating to London, Vangelis established his own state-of-the-art recording studio, producing a steady flow of recordings including 1975's Heaven and Hell, 1976's Albedo 0.39, 1977's Spiral, and 1978's Beaubourg. Teaming with Anderson under the name Jon & Vangelis, he also scored a series of U.K. hits, including 1980's "I Hear You Now" and the following year's "I'll Find My Way Home."

Vangelis' international commercial breakthrough followed in 1982, when his score to Chariots of Fire earned the film one of its many Academy Awards; its theme song even cracked the Top Ten on the U.S. pop charts. That same year, he also created the powerful score to the cult classic Blade Runner, the beginning of a partnership with director Ridley Scott, which also yielded soundtracks to films including 1492: Conquest of Paradise. Vangelis also composed the music for a number of Jacques Cousteau documentaries in addition to maintaining his flourishing solo career, issuing acclaimed LPs including 1985's The Mask, 1988's Antarctica, and 1990's The City. In 1992, he was awarded the Chevalier Order of Arts and Letters, one of France's most prestigious honors. El Greco followed in 1998. In 2001, he re-recorded an orchestral version of his 1993 composition Mythodea, it was used by NASA for their Mars Odyssey mission that same year. Vangelis teamed with director Oliver Stone and composed the score to Stone’s 2004 film Alexander. 2007 saw releases of two soundtracks in the form of a 25th Anniversary edition of Blade Runner entitled Blade Runner Trilogy, and a score for Greek film El Greco. In time for the London 2012 Olympics, he re-tooled and recorded new pieces for the enduring and iconic Chariots of Fire, further endearing the musical legacy of the track to a new generation. The esteemed composer returned two years later, with a number of compositions created to celebrate the European Space Agency's Rosetta Space Probe mission, which reached its landing target in 2014. These compositions were eventually released as their own full-length release, entitled Rosetta, in 2016. ~ Jason Ankeny

Wish they'd get the lyrics right. It's not I watched see Beams glitter.... I once saw the original concept lyrics somewhere, and it should be I watched C-beams glitter..... C-beams were an offensive space-based weapon using beams (rays) of Contra-terre n e matter (antimatter) which annihilated ordinary matter, releasing E=MC2 of energy. I wouldn't mind, or nitpick, if watch see beams didn't make it sound like Roy Batty stuttered or couldn't create such a beautiful monologue.

Yep, you're right..Moraz replaced Rick Wakeman after he left and was on one LP....Relaye r . . . O n e of their best in my opinion but I'm biased because the 1st time I saw them was on that tour..Blew me away. I still rememberi Anderson asking the crowd to sit and enjoy (as everybody on the floor had pushed toward the stage when they came out), and they did !! In one synchronized movement the entire floor sat and stayed that way. At least until Roundabout & Close to the Edge were performed !!

Thanks for the correction, my bad. Was thinking of Patrick Moraz.

Vangelis was never a member of Yes...He and Jon Anderson collaborated on two or three LP's together though. Friends of Mr Cairo by Jon & Vangelis is a great album. Highly recommend it..

Hello all and @njuriah - To clarify, Vangelis did NOT record/tour with Yes. Patrick Moraz played keys on Relayer. Vangelis did record several pretty excellent albums with Jon Anderson, the one true lead vocalist of Yes.

Needs Heaven and Hell, Albedo 0.39, Spiral, China, See You Later, Soil Festivities, and Mask. Hell, I'd like Beaubourg and Invisible Connections added.

First heard of him via Aphrodites Child in 1973. Went right to Earth, my favorite solo album of his. He's created a lot of great music- a real musician.

It was 1970 that my hippie friends and I discovered Aphrodite's Child's' 666. It was part of our basic musical repertoire for when we were doing hallucinogen i c s indoors.

In the late 70s, a neighbor friend turned me on to something magical: an album titled Spiral, from an artist named Vangelis and I was hooked. I now have some 30 titles from this genius of a musician.

But it wasn't till a few years ago that I made the connection: 666 was Vangelis. My favs are Antarctica and Blade Runner.

Without doubt the most creative artist in the last 30 years, a genius who will stay in the music history next to Chopin, Vivaldi, Brahms, Mozart, etc.
Long live Vangelis!!

Vangelis is the father of symphonic electronica. An artist filled with so much pure creativity he will go down in history as one of the Great Masters of Music.

I love all of Vangelis's work, but my favourite piece is Heaven and Hell

The title cut from Conquest of Paradise reminds me of great works from classical Russian composers: That blinds brilliantly! Why does Pandora imply that Vangelis is dead?: Vangelis doesn't really exist here, after all! He's far too good for this life plane--such works aren't intended for us! (Somehow in error, his content leaks from an enlightened parallel universe!--S h h h h ! )
