Awesome. They performed this at Live Aid, before they were the iconic band they are now. In the middle of the song, Bono broke into a Rolling Stomnes' Sympathy for the Devil mix. Totally awesome!!!!
This is why I love U2. Their songs are so simple, but yet have so much meaning. The rhythms, beats, & lyrics are always perfect when u2 is performing them! \m/ I'm wide awake (:
@rabbitbunny, U2 are Irish. I get your point, though!

Let it go! Very powerful song from a fantastic album. Always overshadowed by The Joshua Tree but there is a vibe on The Unforgettable Fire that is well...unforgettable.
One of their best songs ever..................and so on

This was the last song of their set in Pittsburgh. It appears they did it impromptu. As they were waving to the crowd, Bono quickly huddled the guys together, they all nodded and ran back to their instruments and started playing this. It was beautiful. At the end he even started singing the end of '40'.

I was there too. In one of the reviews the next day it said that he was referring to a friend of his from his youth who is now currently living in Cleveland and came to Pittsburgh for the show.
In Pittsburgh last Tuesday, Bono said that the song was about somebody he greatly admired who grew up on the North Side of Pittsburgh. I was thinking, maybe, Andy Warhol, but he grew up in Oakland, not the North Side. Any ideas?
I have to disagree tahritz with the Wide Awake version. I think this version is by far superior. Having said that I do feel the Wide Awake version is still very good.
No, it was not about Bono's heroin addiction. It was about a friend of his' addiction. Bono was never addicted to heroin.
I am a huge U2 freak and this is probably my favorite U2 song of all.
It still moves me to tears.

I've heard before that this song is about Bono kicking a drug addiction (to heroin I believe?) early in his career. It is rare that a live version of a song is better than the studio version, but in this case the live version from "Wide Awake in America" is even more amazing than this version (if that's possible).
Excellent beyond any words I can think of. U2 was just channeling something magical into their music in the 80's. There's almost something supernatural going on here. It's hard to believe humans can come up with such beautiful stuff given our history and habits.

Gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it...

On my solo drives across the country from WV to CO I listened to The Unforgetable Fire over and over. Seemed to fit so well with not only the change of scenery (lushness to wide open spaces) but to my own life changing experience. A new journey beginning
I think the song is about two people sharing a love but one is looking for the promise of something bigger and better and they leave a good love behind for the expectation of something greater. the other half wishes them well.
To me this song is about some one falling in obsessive love with someone when their committed to someone else. And being very aware that you are not to act on the impulse.
