I read years ago that Bono wrote these lyrics because he related to the oppression of the black community who had leaders to help bring to light the way they were being treated unfairly compared to the oppression of the Irish Catholics had no one to fight the Brits who treated Irish Catholics terribly.

The song had been intended to be about Ronald Reagan's pride in America's military power but after the lyricist Bono had been influenced by Stephen B. Oates's book Let The Trumpet Sound: A Life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and a biography of Malcolm X. these caused him to ponder the different sides of the civil rights campaigns, the violent and the non-violent.<1> In subsequent years, Bono has expressed his dissatisfaction with the lyrics, which he describes, along with another Unforgettable Fire

http://www.worldmag.com/2005/08/salty_dogma If you choose to believe that U2 is not a Christian Band. Thankfully they are.
Here's how this song goes, it's a MLK tribute with a small reference to Judas betraying Jesus with a kiss, which would make sense as U2 is known for the grandiose statements they make about politics and their religion.
The 5th verse is clearly about MLK. The entire song could be about him, ask the band. I believe it is more representative of God & Christ though. There are over 400 references to love in The Bible. God is Love. He gave us Jesus because He loves us... I interpret The Word in songs because I hear The Gospel, and its true. My comment are certainly not definitive... The Bible is the only book I know of that's alive... The Wiggles have some virtuous tunes, with a good message for kids. Love, Rev Rob.
U2 before Bono decided it was all about him (rather than simply deliver, as they said 3 chords & the truth).

I love this song. I enjoy u2's spiritual references without believing them. To me the bible is an interesting, extremely influential, and ancient work of fiction and u2 is referencing that (no matter what their personal beliefs). They ideas they take from the bible are just that, ideas. An idea is not good or bad simply because it was written in the bible, and the ideas u2 take generally have a wider application than JUST religion, ie. peace, love...You dont need the bible for those...

Sure, this song is about MLK. U2 is also a band composed of Christians, who recognize that songs about MLK can also be about Christ and other martyrs for their beliefs. Which is why it's even more powerful than most martyr songs
This is an earth shattering hit that shouts out to all who will listen. The message is clear as long as you don't have blinders on. Bono is truly a visionary. Pure emotion.
Rev. Rob, This is the third review like this I've seen by you. Are you completely delusional or are you that destined to spread the word no matter how far off the mark you are from the actual meaning of the song? I swear, you would find a religious meaning to a Wiggles tune.
i think the song is about killing our greatest messengers one after the other and we do not learn the message... and the killing is in the name of love
The song is about Christ. He later alludes to MLK as someone who gave himself in the name of love. So many U2 songs have a spiritual leaning. They have used their influence to impact others. "They will be known by their fruit" Matthew 12:33. U2 has helped others with their God given abilities. Rev Rob
It does not matter. U2 is a band who defends life. Anyone who fails that reception, Is an enemy of the country. It's the world you live in. Think for yourself.
This has always been one of my very favorite U2 songs. Such an incredible combination of epic stadium-shaking chorus, well-crafted and quieter verses, and heartfelt emotion in the lyrics.
This was performed at President Obama's pre-inaugeration party, in THAT SPOT where MLK did his " I have a dream " speach - I almost fell out of my chair; it was THAT speech which probubly inspired the song ! So great is this song - a great tribute to Martin Luther King. A song of Love .
