Tristania

Regarded as one of the world's premiere goth metal bands, Norway's Tristania have earned their reputation through risk-taking creativity, unquestionable talent, and perhaps more than anything else, an impressive consistency from release to release. First coming together in 1996, Tristania took the uncommon step of showcasing three separate vocalists of wildly divergent styles to represent their lyrics, these being operatic soprano Vibeke Stene, clean-singing counter-tenor Østen Bergøy, and harsh, black metal-style shrieker Morten Veland. The last also played guitar and composed most of Tristania's lush, symphonically enhanced goth metal, but also counted on the help of lead guitarist Anders H. Hidle, keyboardist Einar Moen, bassist Rune Østerhus, and drummer Kenneth Olsson to make it all reality.

Tristania's eponymous EP was released in 1997, and further albums such as Widow's Weeds (1998) and Beyond the Veil (1999), as well as the Angina EP followed in quick succession, and always through Austria's Napalm label. All fared incredibly well across Europe, with Beyond the Veil in particular earning rave reviews, gaining them inroads into North and South America (where they have since toured extensively) and elevating Tristania to headliner status to boot. The band was dealt a potentially crippling blow, however, when Veland departed to form a new band called Sirenia. Yet, they surprised cynical observers by immediately hiring new vocalist Kjetil Ingebrigtsen and rebounding in style via 2001's World of Glass. A longer hiatus followed but, after indulging in numerous side projects, Tristania reconvened in 2004 to record a new album called simply Ashes, then released it through new label Steamhammer/SPV in January of the following year. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi

The Ravens, Lotus, Equilibrium- h y p n o t i c songs
Where is Rubicon?
Tristania is my favorite goth band out there. There just ain't anything to compare them with. But there are some good ones out there that come a little close, but that's only an atheist expressing my opinion. And we all know what opinions are. U got yours and I got mine.
But for my time and money Tristania rules in the goth metal world.
Beyond the Veil is by far their best work.

Well, for me Widow's Weed and Beyond the Veil are the best albums, though the other albums also have really good tracks.
Widows Weed, the best album, beyond the veil and Angina too, world of glass is still good, the rest not enough for me, love Viveke's voice.

These folks (Tristania) have enough symphony in their sound to make my ears happy.

Magnificent band of the Highest Order as evidenced by... Hearing Magnificence ! Dam, should explain the soaring vocals , etc. But Dam! I'm not a critic! I'm A musician!!

Not sure how this was thrown into my Ensiferum station. But they are still good. Love the female vocals.
They don't have the song "My Lost Lenore" on here, that's one of my favorites.
Finally! Pandora's started playing some of Tristania's music on my station! Yay!
ana_omar1916
Ilake the song is cool tristania
...And of course my fangirly comment about Osten is still near the top of the page. Because I can never be caught saying anything intelligent. . .

The opening of Crushed Dreams always makes me think I'm listening to Nox Arcana. It's that eerie.
I haven't listened to it enough times to have a favorite yet, let alone associate track names with mental impressions of the entire song - can't really remember which is which and they're all rather long and complicated, heh.

I do know that track 4 (Lost) always makes me think my playlist is on random, since the opening to that is just so different.
What's your favorite song from WOG? Mine has to be either the title track, Crushed Dreams, or Wormwood.
Verdict: Totally awesome! I think it might slightly edge out At Sixes And Sevens overall on my scale of enjoyment (definitely hands down superior female vocals for one).
I'd love to buy World of Glass, but I'm broke!
and I asked for an imported album for Christmas already... :'(
Finally got around to acquiring World Of Glass, now in-depth listening begins, yay.
ALMOST bought World of Glass yesterday, but I restrained myself to just 2 new albums instead of the 3 that would have made, heh. It's definitely moved onto the shortlist of things I will probably nab in the very near future though.
I've been listening to Sanguine Sky a lot recently, might be becoming a new favorite.
And, in addition to his FABULOUS voice and poetic lyrics, Osten is also incredibly good-looking . Just had to add that. :) I remember, when I saw the Equilibrium video, my first thought was: "That blonde singer is pretty hot..."
Yeah, I'm insane.
Fate is another good one off Illumination .
Fangirl:
You should! It's a great album. In my opinion, the best songs are World Of Glass and Wormwood.

I myself am considering getting Illumination . . . I love Open Ground, The Ravens, Sanguine Sky, Mercyside, and Down SO much!
I'm considering buying World of Glass...
Isn't he great? Listen to his voice on Angellore, it just blows you away! (If only Morten could recruit him to do clean vocals for Sirenia, sigh...)

I can't wait to see what the new album will be like, I'm very excited to see what new wonders Tristania has in store for us. And of course, how Mary sounds on a full-out album.
Osten is pretty good. I'm impressed! I might be a bit more picky on female singers, but few male singers impress me, and Osten is definitely one of them!
@Laruen:

Although I actually like the growling in Goth Metal, I HAVE to agree with you on Osten's vocals. He is one of my favorite vocalists! (He's the deep singer)
I have to say, if they went from the Sirenia singer to the woman who sings on "Illuminatio n , " they traded up, IMHO! This one has a very nice voice. Also, I was pleasantly surprised by the male singer who comes in at the very end of "Open Ground." No grunting, just singing in a rich booming voice. I'm sure it's blasphemous, but I don't actually like the male grunting that seems so prominent in this genre. It always seems silly to me.

Never heard Tristania before, but I'd be happy to hear more.
who the hellllll is this??? me likey. =))
WWIII:if u hate it then y are u even on this page.....? *cough*no*co u g h * l i f e * c o u g h *
man! I want their older stuff up here! :'(
Fangirls: I'm listening to "The Ravens" right now. :) One of my favorite songs off Illumination !

By the way, I just HAVE to say... Osten's voice has got to be the greatest thing about Tristania! He is truly amazing.
mimicking me, Willow? keep it up! I'd love to see you serve these guys! you'd get fired in no time flat!

"The Ravens" continues to amaze me. :) the song "World of Glass" is amazing as well.
sirenia1313:
I agree, Beyond The Veil is definitely their best album. At least Pandora has World Of Glass, though!
I've always been a hardcore Tristania fan but their best albums Beyond the veil and widows weeds aren't even on here. I still love them but I much more devoted to sirenia.
I love these guys! Their music sounds so... mystic and cosmic. Anybody get what I'm trying to say?
now Willow is gone again! >:)

Oh, God, Willow's back.
Getting into them and love them already. Esp their song "The Ravens"
"The Ravens"... very powerful. I like it!
wish they had the earlier albums like widow's weeds, when morten veland was still in the band.
Listening to "The Ravens" now. What a powerful song. Pretty even.
Lighten up on yourself, angel, you're neither better nor worse than most of the rest of us; you're probably more truthful, though. . .
