Reversing the usual process by which groups break up and give way to solo careers, the Traveling Wilburys are a group made up of solo stars. The group was organized by former BeatleGeorge Harrison, former Electric Light Orchestra leader Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison, thus representing three generations of rock stars. In 1988, the five (who had known each other for years) came together to record a Harrison B-side single and ended up writing and recording an album on which they shared lead vocals. It turned out to be a way to transcend the high expectations made of any of them as individuals, and a delighted public sent the album to number three, with two singles, "Handle With Care" and "End of the Line" hitting the charts. Unfortunately, Orbison died of a heart attack only a few weeks after the album's release.
Two years later, the remaining quartet released a second album, inexplicably titled Vol. 3. Although it didn't match the success of the first Wilburys album, it was another million-selling hit. Throughout the '90s, there were rumors of another Traveling Wilburys record in the works, but no new albums from the group surfaced. Harrison and Lynne did re-team in 1995, when Lynne produced and reworked two John Lennon demos with the Beatles for their Anthology rarities collection. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
My wife bought me the boxed set with the DVD that Olivia Harrison made filming the group putting the first album together. I love that DVD so much that whenever I'm feeling down-in-the-dumps, she tells me Go watch the Traveling Wilbury's because that always cheers me up. They had so much fun making that album, I just love it.

The Wilbury's were the all-time Supergroup. Nuff said!
Last Night. Good song, good song. I love this band. I used to have all of the albums. These guys got together and did really great. It's too bad a bunch of guys that sing can't get together and just do something like this every now and then. that would be great. Something to collect every now and then.
Love seeing the transgenerational comments below. Used to play my vol. 1 audiocassette for my now 28 year old Suzy when she was in her safety seat. She can probably still sing along with Tweeter and the Monkey Man (though she substituted fishes for hell in those lyrics!). BTW, Wake Up Little Susie happened to be on the radio when she left the hospital after being born and was going into a safety seat for the first time!
My wife bought me the boxed set with the DVD containing video of their jam sessions and studio sets, as well as their music videos. Whenever I'm feeling depressed, she tellls me to go watch the Traveling Wilburys because it always picks up my spirits. Watching the DVD, it's obvious they had SO much fun doing these albums.
I wish they were still making music
