Transatlantic (Prog)

Drummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment) had a brainstorm that gave birth to the band Transatlantic. He envisioned a band of himself, Neal Morse (Spock's Beard), and Jim Matheos (Fates Warning). As it turned out, Morse was available, but Matheos was not. Morse came up with the idea of recruiting Roine Stolt (Flower Kings) instead, and all that was left was a bassist. Portnoy contacted Marillion's Pete Trewavas and the group was set. They recorded and released their first album, SMPTe, in 2000, working around everyone's main band obligations. The band issued two albums in 2001, the concert recording Live in America and the studio album Bridge Across Forever, before going on hiatus due to the departure of Morse, who had made the decision to devote his life to Christianity, and chose not only to leave Transatlantic and Spock's Beard, but mainstream progressive rock altogether. The band reunited (with Morse) in 2009 and released its third long-player, The Whirlwind, which was followed by a pair of live outings, Whirld Tour 2010: Live in London and More Never Is Enough: Live @ Manchester & Tilburg 2010 in 2010 and 2011, respectively. The group issued an eponymous fourth studio album in early 2014. ~ Gary Hill, Rovi

I saw Transatlanti c at a small venue in Los Angeles last month. Out F&*cking standing. One of the best concerts I've been to.
You should check out Yellow Matter Custard (Beatles tribute band) it consist of Mike Portnoy, Neal Morse, Paul Gilbert, and a variety of bassist. They are the best Beatles tribute band that i know of.
love this music -neal morse is amazing -just discovered this group- love progressive rock.
New project that Portnoy has with Steve and Neal Morse, LaRue and Casey McPherson, called Flying Colors: http://flyin g c o l o r s m u s i c . c o m /
I myself have just started getting into these Super Groups I call them. I enjoy hearing such great musicains and their great works. I hope that I find more and more of such groups.
All really amazing musicians, the only thing that bothers me is how one of the vocalists tends to get really off-pitch (I'm not sure who it is).
Great projects all of them. Mike is amazing, like him or not, he has done much with his talent. One of the best rock drummers ever, that's for sure. Thanks Mike for all you've done for the industry. Also, really liking the Flying Colors album!

Check out Yellow Matter Custard, the Beatles tribute band that includes Portnoy, Morse, Mr. Big shredder Paul Gilbert and (in its most recent incarnation) Kasim Sulton (Utopia, Meatloaf, etc.) Saw the Chicago show. Incredible faithful reproduction s of the tunes. And some extra fun. Great to see great musicians together for a special show.
Saw MP on the same bill with ELP...a good drummer yes! ... but the best ever? ... no...
I Love TA!!
Actually, Mike left Dream Theater to get a life. :-) He wanted more time with his family. I do think he is an amazing talent that I hope will drive Transatlanti c forward more than in Whirlwind, which I felt was average.
This band is awesome! I hope that indecicive Mike Portnoy decides to do more with this!...
As great a drummer as Portnoy is, he needs to get a life. I'm tired of hearing how great he is from himself. I get it, you are important to yourself.
Good luck with your new band. whatever it may be

No Todd, check out each band member's groups, amazing!
Can't help but hear some Todd Rundgren influence in the writing style. Does anyone know if Todd collaborated with this group at all? Would love to hear this band perform with a full orchestra backing!

@Phil: The Philly show was amazing, as I'm sure any of the shows on the tour must've been. I drove six hours to see them. Far and away the best concert I've ever seen.
I was fortunate enough to see their first gig of the Whirlwind tour in Downey, CA (of all places) in a small enough venue where every seat had a great view. MINDBLOWING! ! ! ! Such great musicianship playing the whole Whirlwind album perfectly! Other then "We All Need Some Light", one of the best ballads ever written (my 1.5 year old grandson sings it!) all other songs were each at least 30 minutes long! One of the most memorable nights of my life!
Man, what a treat when TA reformed for Whirlwind last year. One of the best prog bands ever. I am so bummed I missed them in Philly this spring :(
Its the second time I have heard this band- great stuff i wanna hear more
Portnoy Rules!
Love it, love it, love it!!!
Very, very groovy stuff -
Whirlwind is fantastic; another step forward. And incidentally , Neal has both feet in prog. His Christian work is very, very prog, and his bands are really talented. Not everybody's cup of tea, but he has definitely NOT become Michael W. Smith. :)
Just saw them at Gramercy Theater in NYC last night. Words cannot describe the show!!! Truly an amazing experience.

I don't think Tomh49 knows whats Progressive Rock is. This BAND does it all who could ask for much more ?

Heard they just released a 2-CD set "Whirlwind"; haven't heard it yet but very much looking forward to it. Heard Neal Morse is still playing/writ i n g with them. What a loss to Spock's Beard when he (Morse) stepped away. Neal, please keep a foot in prog!
Call them pretentious, call their music unnecessaril y complex, call it what you will, Transatlanti c is still responsible for some of the most inspired music in the prog vein. Yeah, they do borrow heavily from some formulas used by some of the predominant prog groups of the 70s (most notably Yes), but that was more or less the point. They didn't set out to break new ground, they just aimed to put out some great tunes reminiscent of the genre's heyday, and in that sense, they succeeded handily
To use his own words, tomh49 "typifies what is wrong with modern prog". The fact that he felt the need to clarify what an odd time signature is just shows his own pretentiousn e s s ! If someone calls it rap, you're gonna be disappointed too, so quit with the labels and keep it simple (both in music and life in general). Just get over yourself and enjoy the music for what it is, not for what you want it to be!!
This is a great band and they have a great singer Roine Stolt (Flower Kings) to push them over as an unique group. Outstanding musicians! Rock on!
Top notch devotion to music. This collection of excellent musicians did rock and they still move me when I listen!
look everyone, it's a prog snob....have met many of you experts on all things prog...."tom h 4 9 " take a chill pill, stop judging, spouting your knowledge of music and go listen to Transatlanti c ' s "Live in Europe" side 2, and tell me that it is not beautifully arranged and more importantly, played with raw emotion by some very talented musicians... . h e y no offense man (I love these guys:)) I grew up with the best prog bands Yes, Genesis, etc. and love all the newer stuff....pea c e out.
This band typifies what is wrong with modern prog: if it's played with synths, in an odd time signature (say, 7/8), has quiet passages, some stereotypica l prog arranging, then it Prog! These people have forgotten what motivated the early prog bands: it was not to be sophisticate d for the SAKE of "being sophostocate d , " it was the interest of bringing other musical forms into rock to broaden the musical pallette; jazz, classical, celtic, persian, etc.... This is just boring and redundant crap.
AMAZING! I love these guys. Such wonderful soundscapes and textures and sprawling, epic compositions . Progressive beauty!
How can you beat a lineup like this? Opinions are opinions, but how can anyone consider a good version of Genesis' Firth of Fifth as boring redundant crap?????!
