Tool

Tool's greatest breakthrough was to meld dark underground metal with the ambition of art rock. Although Metallica wrote their multi-sectioned, layered songs as if they were composers, they kept their musical attack ferociously at street level. Tool didn't. They embraced the artsy, bohemian preoccupations of Jane's Addiction while they simultaneously paid musical homage to the relentlessly bleak visions of grindcore, death metal, and thrash. Even with their post-punk influences, they executed their music with the aesthetic of prog rock, alternating between long, detailed instrumental interludes and lyrical rants in their songs.

Tool had a knack for conveying the strangled, oppressive angst that the alternative nation of the early '90s claimed as its own. So, Tool were able to slip into the definition of alternative rock during the post-Nirvana era, landing a slot on the third Lollapalooza tour in 1993, which helped their first full-length debut album, Undertow, rocket to platinum status. By the time the band delivered its belated follow-up, Ænima, in 1996, alternative rock had lost its grip on the mainstream of America, and Tool's audience had shaped up as essentially metal-oriented, which meant that the group and the record didn't capture as big an audience as their first album, despite debuting at number two on the charts. After a co-headlining slot with Korn on Lollapalooza '97 wrapped up, Tool remained on the road, supporting Ænima until well into the next year.

During the band's usual extended hiatus between albums, Maynard James Keenan decided to use his downtime productively by forming a side project, dubbed A Perfect Circle. The band's 2000 debut, Mer de Noms, was a surprise hit, while the ensuing tour was a sold-out success as well. With Tool breakup rumors swirling, the band put the speculation to rest by re-entering the recording studio and issuing the stopgap B-sides/DVD set Salival late the same year. Finally, May 2001 saw the release of Tool's third full-length release, Lateralus, which debuted at the number one position on the Billboard album chart and became the band's biggest hit. After the obligatory several-year sabbatical to pursue other projects, the group returned with another chart-topper, 10,000 Days, in 2006. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine & Greg Prato, Rovi

Serenity and balls out energy filtered to me through Tools music on this Friday Run at the gym!
^-^
Hippie psycopath, true enough (considering tool is its own genre), that's a great point. Now everyone shut up and stick with his POV
@Chicane Maynard is ex-military. . . you?
Guys don't mind chicane he's just looking for a fight don't respond to him

Nietzsche said Without music, life would be a mistake nuff said...
@ Gayvaughn you mad bro? Not my prob that this dirtbag pos disses the military and blasphemes GOD. Check your facts you inbred hillbilly .
@ Wonderqueer and J Fagzier. I guess everyone has to agree with you two lil girls opinions or theirs doesn't count. You two asswipes can carry on your cat fight amongst each other now. Tool sucks and so do both of you sissy's .
This crap is fun to read lmao. It's just a band guys! They aren't curing cancer or feeding starving children. ( maybe they are what do I know ) But they do cure boredom and feed the soul
I love everything from this band
I'm not saying they're better but I'm guessing tool has worked with their instruments longer
Wow is every one brutly angry I'm just sayin tool and chevelle are awesome but cannot be compared because they are in their own gene yes chevelle was inspired by tool but they grew into their own sound it's like comparing fruit and shirts but if we're talking who is better at the instruments tool takes the flag here
sb_batra
@ J. Frazier, I already expressed that Chicane makes Chevelle fans look bad but we're not all like that. On the other hand, you are a scum bag piece of s**t Frazier.

Chevelle isn't a pop band you brain dead c**t. They do not wear skinny jeans or cater to 14 year olds. I hope you suffer an aneurysm.
Really chicane ? Whatever type of f**king name that is .... Maynard was in the military you jackass - he doesn't "diss" the military . God you are close minded . And "gay"nard ? God I swear it's idiots like you that downgrade this planet . Get the f**k off the comment page you swine .
TOOL IS F**KING MAGIC
Pete and Manyard is awesome ^-^
Also yes wonder wall I agree completely too
Gosh Frazier /:( that's pretty mean
I'm sure maynard would write that Bio quite differently. .
yep that about wraps it up
@chicane, you are the tool here. chevelle is equivalent to backstreet boys compared to Tool. they are a pop band with heavy guitar riffs... that's it. at least maynard has an opinion worth expressing. Last time I checked, maynard doesn't pander to 14 yr. old girls as his target audience. keep wearin' those skinny jeans, maybe they will cut off the circulation to your junk so you won't procreate
if maynard looked homeless.. wouldnt he have facial hair?
sb_batra
I love Chevelle but Chicane makes Chevelle fans look bad.
jpmcfresh
Chicane - then go listen to Chevelle and keep trying to convince yourself you actually believe that.
Tool is a bunch of tools. Chevelle is way better . Gaynard is a blasphemous POS that also disses the military. Hey Gaynard, why don't you go live in some third world country ya homeless looking scum bag. Tool SUCKS .
Schism. My all time favorite.
where im from, theres a record store, so ibought the albums, but record stores are falling in numbers, so i can imagine why peopled want them on itunes at this point.
Tell ya what; I like freaking pop, along with NIN, Tool, RATM, Chevelle and many others. Depends on my mood. Everyone STFU and comment on how you like the song or what you think the lyrics mean or whatever, stop being judgmental a$$es. K?
Would you please sign with freaking itunes, tool? Trust me, soon as I found out I'd own every single song of every single album.
My favorite on this album
Tool, AiC, Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine, Mad Season, Nirvana, Pearl Jam... my jam :)
Tool and Chevelle are both really cool to me...and this is a cool song
Y'all need to check out Saturn ascends, TooL tribute band, absolutely phenomenal!!
LOVE this album
cay.tayz
Why isn't Tool on iTunes??
Why am I not allowed to like Tool AND Chevelle?
Would that I didn’t get bored every time a Tool song comes on…Talent they may have but that doesn’t make them sound less like whiney c**ts.
b.mess7
