To Ryan, the Wikipedia article says: "...Petty later admitted that ("The Last DJ" was) inspired by Los Angeles DJ Jim Ladd..." I grew up listening to Ladd, (and others like him at the time). He's about the only one still practicing his style of "free form" radio - he alone decides what to play and when to play it, and combines songs by theme or topic. He's not afraid of the obscure or controversial.

I'd argue there's no irony here. Pandora is (ostensibly) all about choice and any artist can get on board. Pandora is owned independently. This is about the DJ role transforming into one of the corporate puppet. Sure we lack a human voice, but I'd rather have MY choice of music and no human voice, than Top 40 and a corporate mouthpiece. /rant :-)
