This songs sounds like one of my theme type songs, but I've always been certain about a few things since high school, maybe a few detours and wrong turns along the way. It's hard to call a bluff when most everything is a bluff anyway.
Why does it have to be a cautionary tale, though? Why MUST there be a fall from grace at the end? Have we become that eager to see our heroes falter that that's how it "must" be? I like the open-endedness...
I agree with Panda. Seems like the whole point of the song is that even though "the sky was the limit", it all fell apart because Eddie got caught up in the superficialities of life--movie stars, charts. Poof, he just disappeared into the great wide open.
Just as Rick says, a cautionary tale full of sound and fury signifying nothing. Shouldn't there be a fall from grace at the end: drug overdose, tabloid video, or helicopter crash?

Best line: He met a girl out there with the tatoo too.
I kind of agree with Fibbles. It seems like this song could have used one more verse. Petty sets it up as a story... he tells you about Eddie's beginnings and his rise to fame, but then he leaves it at that. The story is presented as a cautionary tale, but nothing is told at the end.
Johnny Depp stars in this music video. Great song, great actor, great video.

We don't need to know what happened to Eddie. "the future was wide open" which means anything is possible. Would ruin the song if we got to know what happened to Eddie.

It is a good thing that we are clueless because panic would set in.
