The Toasters

One of the most important American ska bands, the Toasters did much to popularize the genre on the underground scene in the mid- to late '80s, laying the groundwork for later third wave bands like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and ska's subsequent explosion in popularity in the mid- to late '90s. British expatriate Rob "Bucket" Hingley formed the Toasters in New York City in 1982 after discovering that the 2 Tone ska he loved had made virtually no inroads into the American music scene. He gathered several employees at the comic-book store he managed to form the Toasters' first incarnation, releasing their first single, "Beat Up," in 1983. Hingley also formed his own label, Moon Ska Records, to counteract skepticism from major labels that ska would ever prove popular in the U.S.; Moon Ska has since grown into the largest independent ska label in the country.

A demo EP, Recriminations, was released in 1985 and produced by Joe Jackson, the first of several collaborations; two years later, the Toasters issued their first full-length American album, Skaboom, for Celluloid. Thrill Me Up (1988) and This Gun for Hire (1990) helped consolidate the band's following, as the New York ska scene and Moon Ska's artist roster mushroomed behind them. The Toasters' lineup continued to shift through the '90s, eventually leaving guitarist/vocalist Hingley the only original member; some of the musicians remaining fairly steady in their '90s lineups included bassist Matt Malles, saxophonist Freddie Reiter, trumpeter Brian Sledge, trombonists Rick "Chunk" Faulkner and Erick "E-Man" Storckman, keyboardist Dave Barry, drummer Johnnathan McCain, and vocalist Coolie Ranx, as well as frequent guest appearances from saxophonist Lester "Ska" Sterling.

In addition to Hingley's activities with Moon Ska, the Toasters continued to release albums throughout the decade, including New York Fever (1992), Dub 56 (1994), Hard Band for Dead (1996), and D.L.T.B.G.Y.D. (1997). The Toasters soldiered on in the new millennium with 2002's Enemy of the System; the 2003 compilation In Retrospect: The Best of the Toasters; and 2007's One More Bullet, released in celebration of the band's 25th anniversary. When not in the studio, Hingley and his ever evolving Toasters lineup can be found touring the U.S., Europe, and other ska-hungry corners of the globe. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi

I'm glad I got to see this band in high school :)
are you sure i thought that song from kablam was a fishbone song
80s Ska is the best; and I like the integrated bands & especially bands with socio-politi c a l lyrics, but I also like the ska that includes females & there have been at least two all-girl bands that I know of plus a few solo-ska female artists.

I only know this song as the opening for Kablam!, back in the day.
We are old retirees. We were in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2010 and met a group of very interesting and very nice guys called the Toasters. We have followed them online since and love their music. Their music is ageless -unlike us!!

scalding turkeys everywhere with pasty lava basters
3rd wave is crap
Toasters are definatley one of my favorite 3rd wave bands, but I thought this tour was the weakest I've seen from them. Bucket is great, but I missed a lot of missing vocals being "toasted" from another singer. Coolie Ranks was the best out of all their other vocalists.

I saw The Toasters last night in Jacksonville , Fl with The Voodoo Glow Skulls at a renovated convenience store. What a show. VGS is just a ridiculously great band and The Toasters are still the best at delivering straight 2 tone ska.
trayfoe
Seeing them tonight at the "Ska is dead" show in Ybor, cant wait!
I agree Bosstones are no good, the toasters are one of the best 3rd wave for sure.
poopmist
to me the Toasters epitomize what ska is about. Also i agree with you flynnbm4 about the Bosstones they have a couple of songs but for the most part i think they are garbage.
flynnbm4
Toasters were the best of the 3rd wave.Where are we now 5th or 6th wave? I guess I am a bitter old man, but nothing compares to old ska or two-tone for me. Some good stuff out there, but a lot of Ska-rock bands seem kind of watered down. Still can't listen to the Bosstones, but some people swear by them.
Separates the men from the boys
Greatest ska band ever - no debate
SKA
original ska, ska in its purest form, if anything deserves to be called ska, the toaster take the cake oi oi oi
rayjay92
The Original "Skankers!!" :) and i mean that with love and admiration! :)
Good Music. If you like this you should check out The Sugar Packets at www.myspace. c o m / t h e s u g a r p a c k e t s . Listen to the song Downhill Dilema. Kind of like Jewish Ska or something. Reminds me of Ska mixed with Fiddler on the Roof or something. It's absolutely amazing. The toasters are sweet tho.
this is super down

The Toasters are awesome.
Give mad props to Bucket and the Crew. The Toasters and Moon Records gave a whole nation of kids a lesson in SKA 101. Thanks for so much great music from the Toasters to LGB and HepCat.
