Tarkio

Formed in 1996 in the college town of Missoula, MT, Tarkio, named for a small city in the western part of the state, featured the talents of guitarist Gibson Hartwell, bass player Louis Stein, drummer Brian Collins, pedal steel player Kevin Suggs, and singer/songwriter and future Decemberist Colin Meloy. The band mined similar musical territory as college rock staples the Go-Betweens, the Waterboys, and R.E.M., employing a blend of alternative country and Americanized Brit-pop that won them a small but loyal regional following. Between 1996 and 1999 they released two records, the full-length I Guess I Was Hoping for Something More and the EP Sea Songs for Landlocked Sailors, both of which were reissued on the Kill Rock Stars label as a two-disc set called Omnibus in 2006. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

super 90's
This was Colin's band before he joined/found e d The Decemberists . Great album (it's actually a double album)
Wait. This isn't the Decemberist?

This song is great. I had no idea who Tarkio was. Nice to hear new stuff.
Heavens to Betsy. Fresh songs from Colin? Yes please.
Colin is the best indie song writer, could match neil young if he keeps it up.

Props for being from Zoo Town! Love it here!
makes me miss ilving in missoula. oh ...home sweet home.
@wjmortsleam - it is odd, but refreshing. The early to mid Decmberists stuff is good, but the King is Dead and Tarkio are better.
Kind of odd how Colin has gone full circle, abandoned the baroque art pop and heavy prog guitars of earlier Decemberists albums and returned to the strummy REM alternacount r y vibe of Tarkio.

I was a drunk annoying bar patron heckling Collin in those days. Now I'm just a drunk annoying bar patron. My career has not gone as well as Collins. :)

The Decemberists live in concert are absolutely awesome!!

sweet
Eloquent language in the lyrics enables the listener to expand the realm of intellect to the point of clicking on the wikidictiona r y constantly.. . .

I like Meloy but now it is 2010 and he seems to be using the same melodic lines over and over again in his music. He really needs to collaborate with someone else to change things up.

i used to play on the same stages in missoula alternating nights with Tarkio. i watched colin stop shows to yell at annoying fans. I think he even had a few removed from the bar. I must say, i like Tarkio much more than the decemberists . sorry Arvis.

I'll rail against popular opinion here and say that The Decemberists are generally much better than what I've heard of Tarkio. Tarkio has the same unapproachab l e lyrical style as the Decemberists , but without the rich, lush quality to the music behind them.

Tarkio essentially boils down to a boring version of The Decemberists .

awesome! big decemberists fan, but i do like this better. cant believe i never knew.

Pretty fantastic stuff. Do prefer the sea shanties of The Decemberists but Colin Meloy proves that no matter which genre he undertakes he destroys it. Fantastic sound and lyrics.
i gotta agree with kevin and patrickstanl e y . not a big fan of the decembrists either.
I hadn't heard of these guys, but really like the sound.
This makes me happy to be from Montana :)
I like the Decemberists , but the Tarkio stuff sounds less contrived - more honest. It's too bad that Colin Meloy seems to have forgotten that not every song needs to tell a story.
How can you say you dont like the Decemberists ? ? ! ! Theyre great!!! One of my faves!
kevin832
i don't like the decemberists at all but really dig these guys.
haha, i ALMOST said this sounded just like the decemberists , and what do ya know(: just like postal service and death cab(:

I love this band so very much and think Colin Meloy is extremely talented. Wish I could have seen them live. The Decemberists are equally fantastic and put on incredible shows.
@ Bromide:
...what?
It refers to the Decemberist revolution in nineteenth century Russia.
ae_harmon, you definitely should see them live. They put on a great show.
Out of all of the months december, why? Septemberist could have made twice the money.
ae_harmon
The Decemberists bug me. Sound like the're trying too hard to be quirky. Maybe I need to see them live to fully appreciate what they have to offer.

This does sound like The Decemberists , but The Decemberiste s sound slightly different since this isn't The Decmeberists but a band that sounds like The Decemberists because it has the singer from The Decemberists in it, so that's probably why it sounds like The Decemberists , but not quite exactly like The Decmeberists .
The Decemberists rock, i think this is good too.. i like the sound to it, sounds similar to The Decemberists but i still like the The Decemberists lyrics.
yeah, I also recognized the voice and thought it was the decemberists . this came up on my decemberists radio channel....a n d i like it! i like the music sound, but i think i like decemberists ' lyrics more.
jpino9
Love it...love the decemberists . . . l o v e the banjo sound, tho i think that's the pedal steal...not quite sure. what a nice discovery

Recognized the voice and thought it was the Decemberists . Huh. Never knew about these guys.
i basically love Colin Meloy so this was pretty awesome to come across. Had no idea he ever had a band before decemberists
