Taproot

Ann Arbor, MI's own Taproot sent their demo to Limp Bizkit's frontman/business entrepreneur Fred Durst in 1998, not ever thinking Durst would call them back personally. To the band's surprise, Durst replied, promising the alt-punk metal quartet the world. But Durst apparently took too long to deliver the goods, for Taproot -- whose lineup comprised frontman Stephen Richards, guitarist Michael DeWolf, bassist Philip Lipscomb, and drummer Jarrod Montague -- landed a deal with Atlantic Records instead. Durst felt betrayed and vented his frustration to various media outlets, but an unfazed Taproot focused on their debut, Gift, which arrived in June 2000 and unveiled the band's tough thrash sound.

Thanks to support from Ozzy Osbourne's son Jack, Taproot scored a spot on the second stage on the 2000 Ozzfest tour. Two years later, Rolling Stone hailed Taproot as "the next contenders for the new-metal crown." The band then spent seven months in Los Angeles recording the fierce, introspective sophomore album Welcome, which earned accolades from such publications as Vanity Fair. The album eventually peaked at number 17 on the Billboard 200. Blue-Sky Research appeared in August 2005; produced by Toby Wright (who also helmed the group's previous album), it also included three songs co-written with Billy Corgan. A split with Atlantic Records followed, and Taproot opted to independently issue their next record. Our Long Road Home arrived in 2008, having been recorded in the band's native Ann Arbor with producer Tim Patalan. After signing to Victory Records, the band set to work recording new material. In 2010 they released their fifth album, Plead the Fifth, on Victory, followed by The Episodes in 2012. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, Rovi

Taproot came out to a little town call Clermont FL and hung out after the show was over with everyone. Very cool guys had a blast.
Taproot mirrors reflection
Like taproot they jam.
These guys are so cool. I saw them in a small club in Orlando. I remember the lead singer gave the mic to people in the crowd during some parts of the songs and let them sing the chorus. Very cool stuff!!!
sbancker
amazing group of guys
Love it
I'm gonna try and make a anime that this is either an OST for or an opening
Your calling but I can't hear you <3
Yes , just amazing especially the msg
missd this music now i make money n i like it more
I've seen them live four times. Great stage performance, lots of interaction with crowd. Steven gives mic to someone for chorus of poem, picked me, and since then huge fan.
I street team for these guys! Very proud!
I'm from Michigan too! Awesome! First song I've heard from them, but this is AWESOME!
oxygen2424
These guys kill it live!! ~ I saw them in NH. They def are not emo!
onegoldengir l
Love these guys
abyers822
saw them live twice last year -- the first time in a very small venue and they ripped it up - they came onto the floor and played in the crowd - steven moshed a bit - they hung out and got drunk after the show -- great time -- cant wait to see them live again
I manage a band out of Grand Rapids, Mi called Shadow Status.. The guys opened for them March 12th 2011 and I got to meet with the guys and talk with them for a while.. The guys are simply AMAZING!! You can check out Shadow Status at www.facebook . c o m / s h a d o w s t a t u s
i saw them in 2006..and I thought they were awesome live..brough great energy to the crowd. while creating a very melodic alt-metal sound. so kelli canady..if you want to listen to taproots records. you can do that at home or in your car. ;)
I heard these guys live recently, they don't sound like their records :(
jrbrooks2006
I sent this song to my ex-wife.
imzippytheth i r d
they're okay, but not metal by any means...
Taproots first 3 albums were pretty phenomenal but when "Our Long Road Home" came out I wanted to scream. It sounded like something emo like "My chemical Romance" or something. I liked the first song on that album but the rest I didn't care for too much. Their new album "Plead The Fifth" is a step in the right direction, but still I feel falls short of the greatness of their first few albums. I think maybe they have been caught up in the whole music biz bullshit and have lost sight of...
@ gabriel-

give the new album "plead the fifth" a listen. they have def gone back to their roots more. i think you'll like
I still have the cassette tape demo for Taproot. Its about 11 years old. It had Poem and some other song on it. I got that Taproot, From Zero, American Pearl, Head PE, Linkin Park and...I forget now...i just remember the cover art was gross...man, thats gonna bother me...
I never have considered tap root "metal" personally.. . But I have liked all their albums. Our Long Road Home was a deviation from their norm.. but they are entitled to try out new things. While it may have rocked the boat with some of their more die hard fans, I thought it was a well done album.
The first 3 records were good but unfortunatel y they sh#t the bed with 'Our long road home', probably the blandest and most boring record I heard last year. Sounds like they need to take another listen to the 'Gift' album and try to recapture that kind of rawness. They definitely need to move in another direction.
taproot has one of the most annoying vocalists i've ever heard. plus their "musicianshi p " (if you can even call it that) sucks. whoever coined the phrase "nu-metal" should be dragged into a street somewhere and shot. if a band wants to be metal, learn to play your instrument, not just thrash on a guitar. i hate how anyone who uses distortion on their guitar is automaticall y deemed "metal" if that were the case then fall out boy is a metal band. if that ever did come to pass i think i'd just leap
It's hit or miss. It's certainly not as hard as many of their other albums, but it still has some really good songs. Check out Karmaway, As One, Hand That Holds True, and Path Less Taken.
Idk they had a new album well 2008 being new. It any good??
Why is Gift's artwork now a Kevin Michael album cover?
They f**ked up Gift's artwork :(.
It's kinda interesting how one artist can be compared to Chevelle and 10 Years while being compared to Mudvayne
They were gonna call themselves Korn, but it was already taken.
anyone who say they don't like taproot needs dog crap thrown at them.
Christopher, ur an a$$
Holy crap this is lame. It's just so... bleh and yucky to my ears.
They ROCk as they always have. Currently touring. Go see em. They will not dissappoint no matter what genre you enjoy. This guys will leave you inspired after a night of rocking out with them. The newest album shows their maturity as people as well as musicians. I suggest any fan of REAL ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC go buy OUR LONG ROAD HOME by TAPROOT. I have, twice now to be exact.
poem is my favorite song
brahmabullnd
Just saw them with Sevendust. Kick a** live band!

These guys are incubus before incubus got the good drugs. Great sound. Mellow, and hard, all at the same time. I love it.
I think Gift is the best album! It is so much louder than all the other ones!
Best band ever... Also, love the new CD.
Love it... when are they going to do new music???
elizabethluq u e
bad a** band. great live performances . ozzfest 2000 san antonio!!!!
beatfeet6
smile end of story.
i like blue-sky research. i used to be a lot more into the heavier metal ish stuff, but now i'm more into the indie scene. i like the song calling though. good vocals and instrumentat i o n .
taproot is an excellent band, and if you want a good smooth heavy yet not excessivly noisy album then you want Blue-Sky Research. If you want a more raw sound of Taproot to Welcome is a must have, in my opinion is it the best album but i like the heavy and unique mix of vocals and instrument, Welcome is much darker than Blue-Sky but i think it has a better Taproot sound
