Tanita Tikaram made a splash on both sides of the Atlantic at a mere 19 years of age with her dramatic, singer/songwriter-influenced lyrics. The offspring of Malaysian and Fijian parents, Tikaram moved to England at age 12 and began writing songs as a teenager. She played her first gig at 17 in London and, after appearing on television, was signed to Warner and released Ancient Heart in 1988. Both "Twist in My Sobriety" and "Good Tradition" were European hits, and Tikaram toured the world. She later settled into the status of a cult act, a situation not changed by less consistent albums to follow, although she bounced back in the '90s and continued to record into the 21st century. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
I first heard Tanita in Los Angeles County while driving home on a Saturday morning. I listened to 95.5 KLOS then and the DJ announced this new single as a sort of check it out & let us know what you thinkg kind of thing. From that moment on I couldn't get enough of this talented and poignant artist. She is awesome and very worth listening to and waiting for!!
I think her raspy burnished voice compares well to tracy chapman and her early releases including the gospel inflected everybody's angel show a depth that withstands scrutiny and grow on you over the years. Her latter music is more accessible and less opaque but kicks with earnest emotion and irony.

She sounds like Annie Lennox.

One of the most under-appreciated singer/songwriters of the last 20 years.
