Like a supernova, Roger "Syd" Barrett burned briefly and brightly, leaving an indelible mark upon psychedelic and progressive rock as the founder and original singer, songwriter, and lead guitarist of Pink Floyd. He was responsible for most of their brilliant first album, 1967's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, but left and/or was fired from the band in early 1968 after his erratic behavior had made him too difficult to deal with; Pink Floyd never recaptured the playful humor and mad energy of their work with Barrett. After a period of hibernation, he re-emerged in 1970 with a pair of albums, The Madcap Laughs and Barrett, which featured considerable support from his former bandmates. Barrett's eccentric humor, sly wordplay, and infectious melodies range from brilliant to chaotic on his solo work. Lacking the taut power of his recordings with the Floyd in 1967, they nevertheless remain fascinating and moving glimpses into a creative psyche gone awry after (it is theorized) too much fame and too many drugs too early. With increasing psychological problems, Barrett withdrew into near-total seclusion after these albums. He never released any more material, and these days rarely appears in public, let alone to play music. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
One of the best forgotten songwriters of all time. I'm waiting for glhim to rediscovered by my generation. I'm 18, so think it can be done

I dig the Soft Boys & select Robyn Hitchcock tracks but he's practically aping Syd Barrett much of the time in my opinion. Hitchcock's stuff isn't anywhere near as inspired as even the most middling of Syd's stuff in my estimation at least.
he's dead, which would explain why he hasn't been out in public lately

Syd's ghost lives on in the soul of Robyn Hitchcock. Seriously . . . if you like Syd Barret check out Robyn Hitchock (Soft Boys, & the Egyptians) He's put out, like, 30 albums so far. Listen to at least 4 of them before making up your mind. He's brilliant . . . and really twisted. Top notch musician as well.
Syd Barrett was the inspiration of anything known until today as Pink Floyd. Even after his departure, the band relied on him heavily . Barrett died July 7 2006 in Cambridge England. I believe this is more accurate than Pandora's Bio but thanks for playing Pink Floyd music.
If you find Syd's Musical Poetry disturbing, hear it a lot ..Then do not listen. I find it honest ...honest is not PC now tough, I know....Honesty on LSD and Barbs, Imagine it!!!

Poor Syd. There are very obvious flashes of brilliance in his solo material, but his overriding mental illness is just so incredibly apparent that it makes for difficult listening. "Dark Globe" is one of the most disturbing songs I've ever heard.

I am a huge Floyd fan, Syd fans MUST check out Daniel Johnston!
while i find his stuff in many ways to be amazing and genius,i also find trying to listen to most of it to be very painful....its like he has all of these amazing almosts, but nothing ever seems to work right....when i hear his solo stuff,i hear a mix of painful but unsuccessful reaching out(from him),and blatant, crude exploitation(from everything else)
Syd could hardly have helped during the recording sessions of WYWH. According to accounts, the band "was" devastated when they were informed that the odd overweight fellow moving about the room with all the hair shaved from his head (including eyebrows)and at times hopping up and down brushing his teeth, was indeed Syd Barrett.
Every single album that Pink Floyd created, sans Syd, was inspired by, or in reverance to Syd. Everything. Syd was the Musical Martyr. His sacrafice was his mind, and The Floyd grew, excrescently, from his genius.

syd was a very important person during the 60's "please please baby lemonade"
He wasn't the only one who had "the wheels fall off" during that period. Some of the stuff floating around then had some imperfections in it and was made by amateur chemists. Some adventurous souls tooks multiple doses and never came back to what we call sanity. Some were a few fries short of a happy meal to start with. I am not saying that about Syd. But it could be.

The best Pink Floyd songs are those written by Syd Barrett, and those are the songs that play non-stop throughout my head all day at school
