Kinda awkward when you suddenly realize that Mrs. Lovett is actually the villain of the story. She hides the fact that Lucy is dead, driving Benjamin Barker to homicide, she suggests cannibalism, and gleefully keeps it up, she manipulates Todd and Toby both. She's creepy!

I stand corrected. Having seen both original productions, I was assuming based on how similar they are in looks and voice. I didn't account for the time lapse in productions that would have made Toby too old to be Jack.
angie476 is incorrect about the actor singing Toby. That's Ken Jennings, and he didn't sing Jack in Into the Woods: Ben Wright did. Jennings would have been about 40 by the time Woods came around.

Angela Landsbury ROCKED as Mrs. Lovett. And Toby is the same guy that did Jack in Into the Woods with Bernadette Peters. He was great in this too. LOVED this version. The movie sucks by comparison even though Depp is still great eye candy even when made to look like a freak. His singing was a pleasant surprise, but I was just sad they had to slow down and leave out everything he couldn't do.
Sweeney Todd is one of my all-time top favorite B'way shows, in spite of the macabre subject. The score is Sondheim's masterpiece. . . and I was fortunate to see the original, AND the brilliantly inventive revival in 2005 with Patti Lupone. Both were astonishing and utterly unforgettable. The movie version was ridiculous, for reasons too numerous to mention.
the movie was a travesty. pray tell, how do you make a movie of sweeney todd and manage to leave out the title song and lyrics that run throughout the whole show?
this is one sondheims best and the movie sucked compared to the original cast

i worked the bar during the run of the show. I knew how lucky I was then...:) Taking about Angela, I did great in 1964-65 Saw every performance of Barbra that way (Winter Garden) and Mame, but left before the others took over...God, I'm bragging...Thank you for reading this...:)

the movie is amazing! Helena Bonham Carter is also in it. YEAH! And the guy who plays Anthony is HOT! The only problem is...they leave out this song!! >:|
