this is the song that got me into them. This song would sneak up on me and I'd ask my friend "Wow, who is this?" And he'd say "Sufjan Stevens Damnit!" Because I had already asked him that question too many times over the time that I knew him. So, I finally looked them up and have bought three of their albums for family and regularly listen to the station.
the trumpets belong- if for no other reason than the song is called Chicago- just like the "adult contemporary/easy listening" band famously featuring trumpets.
Who cares if anyone considers this a hymn or if they're down on Sufjan because he's a Christian? Art is a reflection of self, and what else will this song reflect except what the songwriter believes and lives? If you don't want to listen to "hymns" or anything that reflects what a person truly believes or feels, then listen to some souless Top 40 station.

Slower version is nice, but the original is the best. Both are so beautiful they bring tears to my eyes...
do you have a category for religious hymns, which is essentially what this song is? i notice you don't really address song thematics in your categories.
I didn't know they had another version of this song. It's nice to know they modified their own song, versus some other band.

the original verision is much better. but even the 'adult comporary easy listening verision' is still pretty genius. and the trupets in the original version are very called for. you should check it out
Not bad... I think I could have done without the trumpet break though. Sort of took it from a song w/ a decent underlying groove... with potential to swell into an epic type sound (especially if performed live)... to a rather B-Grade "cheese". There is already a lot going on in this song... the addition of the trumpets seemed to not fit with the overall vibe of the song.
