Stratovarius

Although Helsinki, Finland heavy metal band Stratovarius were formed in 1982 by drummer Tuomo Lassila, the group did not record its debut album, Fright Night, until 1989. Released in 1992, Twilight Time established a fan base in Japan, becoming the biggest-selling import of that year; Stratovarius consolidated their Japanese popularity with an extensive tour of the country behind 1994's Dreamspace. Following 1995's Fourth Dimension, the lineup shifted to include vocalist Timo Kotipelto, guitarist Timo Tolkki, bassist Jari Kainulainen, ex-Yngwie Malmsteen keyboardist Jens Johanssen, and drummer Jorg Michael. This lineup added a choir and orchestra for 1996's Episode in 1996 and 1997's Visions, the latter of which was released in the U.S. early in 1998. American reissues of most of Stratovarius' previous output followed over the course of the year, and in the spring of 2000 the group issued Infinite. Intermission appeared the following summer. The band released the two-part Elements in 2003 and continued its metallic output during the remainder of the decade with such albums as 2005's eponymous Stratovarius and 2009's Polaris (the latter issued following the departure of guitarist Timo Tolkki and arrival of new members guitarist Matias Kupianen and bassist Lauri Porra). 2011's Elysium, the last outing with the group for longtime drummer Michael, spent nine weeks at the number one spot on the Finnish albums charts. It was followed by the band's 14th studio album, Nemesis, in 2013. ~ Steve Huey

When I first head Millennium I fell in love with group.

When I heard Stratovarius for the first time, it changed my life. I found a metal genre that truly fits me. Power metal at its best!

Oldest power metal group I listen to, therefore the best.

Fantastic! I think Styx might sound like this if they were still viable. (That is a compliment; Styx is one of my all-time favorite bands.)

everytime i listen to Stratovarius i am blown away an songs grow on me more and more. I love having Infinite playing in the car. Hunting High and Low, Millenium, Phoenix, Infinite are aw3seome tracks!! Just picked up polaris and elysium cant wait to listen to them in there entirety!

Wow, only three albums? Fail, Pandora, fail. They have 10+ now, get them pl0x. Stratovarius is one of the first power metal bands, show them respect and get the other albums pl0x.
Report as inappropriate
@Matthew - What are you talking about? I just skimmed through every song on that album you mentioned below and not one of them even sounds like the style of Fright Night, Twilight Time or Dreamspace. Your point is therefore invalid. Now if you are just stating your "opinion" you need to realize people have different tastes, and I prefer Stratovarius ' first 3 albums over your recommendati o n .
Report as inappropriate
Chiming in again to point out that the second Revolution Renaissance album, Age of Aquarius, is so much better than their debut (and the last several Stratovarius albums) that it's not even funny. Definitely check it out.

????????? where are the good stratovarius albums??? there's only garbage here!

Recommendati o n s :
From Polaris (2009) - Falling Star, King Of Nothing
From Infinite (2000) - Millenium, Phoenix, Infinity
From Destiny (1998) - Destiny, Playing with Fire
From Visions (1997) - Black Diamond, Paradise, Visions (Southern Cross), but really every song on this album is amazing.
From Episode (1996) - Will the Sun Rise?, Eternity
From Dreamspace** * (1994) - 4th Reich, Dreamspace, Reign of Terror, Abyss

***Timo Tolkki is singing on this album.

I only recently stumbled upon Stratovarius and have quickly become a big fan. However the selections available on Pandora are not really recognized as their better efforts. The 1997 album "Visions" is generally regarded as their strongest, Pandora should really add that.

Both Timo T and Timo K have solo albums, and a Ukrainian band called Sunrise has a very very similar sound and vocalist.
Report as inappropriate
The only thing I have to say about this band is that... Pandora should add their 4 first albums, those are the real GOOD ones...the rest is just........ . . . . . . w e l l nothing special, but the first 4 albums oohhh a different story.
Report as inappropriate
Wish I could add more to this conversation . :(
Report as inappropriate
Yeah, I discovered that a while ago after Amazon recommended Revolution Renaissance to me, reading the reader reviews prompted a quick trip to Wikipedia and a resultant wait, what?

The really odd bit to me is that he signed over control of his band to another guy named Timo. What are the odds of one band having two of those? (Ha ha!)
Report as inappropriate
Wow, I knew Stratovariou s had some personal issues, but was not aware Tolkki quit his own band and gave up all his rights to the name and material he worked on for 23 years because of it! Insane.
Report as inappropriate
True that. Timo's voice is one that isn't universally loved, but those that do not love it, will not likely find a song where he sounds more appealing to you. I will have to check out Revolution Renaissance tho, that sounds interesting, .
Report as inappropriate
Well I'm partial to Deep Unknown from their latest album, but if your issue with Stratovarius is their vocalist, I can't really envision a scenario where he stops bugging you.

You might enjoy Revolution Renaissance though, the band Timo Tolkki founded after he left Stratovarius - similar music style but with Michael Kiske on vocals for their debut album.
Report as inappropriate
I'm a bit frustrated, since for the most part Stratovarius is right up my alley, but in the songs I've heard the vocalist keeps attempting notes he has no business trying to hit, and it drives me crazy. I've had to thumb-down a couple, I think off of Elements. Are there any recommendati o n s for some of their best songs? I want to like this band.
Report as inappropriate
@Matthew Yoho, I assume you looked it up by now but yes, Strato wrote a hunting high and low song. It and the Freedom Call song I find very different so no, they aren't covers.

Intermission is just like a greatest hits kinda.
Report as inappropriate
Hunting High and Low is also on my Intermission album. Excellent song.
Report as inappropriate
@blaize2: Wait, Stratovarius has a "Hunting High and Low" song? Huh, I wonder if the Freedom Call song by the same title was a cover, or just coincidence.
Report as inappropriate
Uwh, I wish they had Infinite if only for Hunting High and Low...

Sounds like you have a system that works. I have a few soft copies of my MP3 collection as well (mostly so I don't have to go the all the work of re-ripping in case of a failure). I like your tactics regarding the ephemeral ... that is a very real issue.
Report as inappropriate
I'm a sucker for (near) instant gratificatio n and not having to leave my (actually quite uncomfortabl e ) chair. It would be nice if digital downloads were in full lossless quality, but even as an audiophile the sound quality is perfectly fine on the mp3s Amazon sells.

I burn physical copies to CD and keep several redundant backups of my mp3 collection to combat the "ephemeral things are easier to lose" aspect.
Report as inappropriate
No kidding. Especially when you're getting it from bookstores that sell music. But then, I paid like 12 or 13 bucks for Spirit at a record store. It was new though. Got Lovelorn used for like 7 or 8 bucks. Heh.
Report as inappropriate
Ahh, that's cool. I personally prefer hard albums that I rip to MP3. I like that idea for a couple reasons. 1) sound quality of the origional, and 2) a hard library of my music is more difficult to get corrupted ... especially if it is never spun.

On the other hand, it can be a more spendy way to acquire music.
Report as inappropriate
@OMW: The MP3. Speaking of which, I just also acquired Elements Pt. 1 in MP3 form tonight thanks to a gift card I had. They were only asking $5.99 for that one, and I think the same price for Pt. 2 as well.
Report as inappropriate
@Yoho: Was the the MP3 or CD?
