Steve Roach

A longstanding leader in contemporary electronic music, composer and multi-instrumentalist Steve Roach drew on the beauty and power of the Earth's landscapes to create lush, meditative soundscapes influential on the emergence of ambient and trance. A onetime professional motorbike racer born in California in 1955, Roach -- inspired by the music of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, and Vangelis -- taught himself to play synthesizer at the age of 20; debuting in 1982 with the album Now, his early work was quite reminiscent of his inspirations, but with 1984's Structures from Silence his music began taking enormous strides, the album's expansive and mysterious atmosphere inspired directly by the natural beauty of the southwestern U.S. Subsequent works including 1986's three-volume Quiet Music series honed Roach's approach, his dense, swirling textures and hypnotic rhythms akin to environmental sound sculptures.

In 1988, inspired by the Peter Weir film The Last Wave, Roach journeyed to the Australian outback, with field recordings of aboriginal life inspiring his acknowledged masterpiece, the double-album Dreamtime Return. A year later, he teamed with percussionist Michael Shrieve and guitarist David Torn for The Leaving Time, an experiment in ambient jazz. After relocating to the desert outskirts of Tucson, AZ, Roach established his own recording studio, Timeroom, and in the years to follow grew increasingly prolific, creating both as a solo artist and in tandem with acts including Robert Rich, Michael Stearns, Jorge Reyes, and Kevin Braheny -- in all, close to two dozen major works in the 1990s alone, all of them located at different points on the space-time continuum separating modern technology and primitive music.

His album roster from that decade includes Strata (1991), Artifacts (1994), Well of Souls (1995), Amplexus (1997), and Dust to Dust (1998). Early Man was released on Projekt in early 2001, followed by one of his many collaborations with Vidna Obmana, Innerzone. Throughout the remainder of the early 2000s, Roach remained extremely prolific, with his release schedule including the Projekt titles Trance Spirits (with Jeffrey Fayman), the quadruple-disc Mystic Chords & Sacred Spaces, Spirit Dome and Somewhere Else (with Obmana), Fever Dreams, Mantram, and Nada Terma (with Byron Metcalf and Mark Seelig), the three-part Immersion series, Arc of Passion, and Stream of Thought (with Erik Wøllo). He also self-released several titles on his own through Timeroom Editions. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Great background music for yoga session.
@bevthrower: Steve is alive and releasing material, even after over 30 years. He is one of the greats and he is active now instead of being "out of print", so we should be thankful.
The memory is a beautiful piece of music - I cannot get enough of it - Peace.
OH NO! MY AC IS OVERWEIGHT!
I been into this man Music sent 1988 and it is still fresh to hear it over and over........ . .

Only one criticism - this bio is written in the past tense, so it makes it sound like the composer is dead. But it looks to me like a guy who released an album this year is probably still alive and working! (At least I hope so.)
suddenly i feel like doing yoga
Where Resa Lives is a beautiful journey through a surreal landscape. GREAT if you want to float off somewhere safe! Feels like I am tethered on a long silver thread through the galaxy. Not too bad for a nine minutes of peaceful travel.
My first Steve Roach experience wasThe Magnificent Void and I was this album seemed to swallow me and transport me to another place. This man is a true master especially in Tribal Ambient. His musical artistry, sou n d quality and detail are unmatched and I know that is a bold statement with greats such as Brian Eno,Klaus Schulze,Vang e l i s , R o b e r t Rich and I have to include Biosphere aka Geir Jenssen etc.
One of the central figures in ambient anywhere. The benchmark, well and truly up there with Eno. One of the masters.
BUT ONE TOO MANY ROACHES ? A LITTLE SPACED-OUT. BUT MUSIC SEEMS TO MAKE ME FEAL HIGH .
PLAY ON INSTANT MEDITION IS GOOD FOR HEALING. BRING IT ON.
Someone walked into my Licorice Pizza in '82-'84 & told me of some great space music being made in Arizona desert. If that was you, Steve, you're the center of my knowwhereman station. Always return. The breath is the vehicle.
Just got a nook and this is the first music I played on it. HAD no idea what or who this was, just sort of blundered into it. Now it seems like I am floating on air. What a nice suprise!!!

Been listening to Steve Roach for almost 10 years. Probably the best music to decompress with when life gets hectic.
This music, and actually it's tones, is very ethereal. You can be out in the middle of deep space. I'll have to take you sometime. It's amazing. People get so interiorized into this place and lose prospective. DMB
Relax put on the head gear
Just say it everyone, repeat after me... I like to get high and listen to this music LoL, someone had to kick the elephant out of the room :)
Makes me feel good to relax and let go ... Sleep tight

VERY INTERESTING. HIS SOUNDS CAUGHT MY EAR. I WILL LISTEN TO MORE.
I first came across Steve Roach years ago when I was producing soundtracks for a planetarium. There is a radio station here (WYSO.org) and on Sunday evenings, around 10pm Alpha Rhythms plays a lot of Steve Roach, Jonn Serrie, etc. The guy who hosts the show has recorded with Steve Roach, so he's a big fan.
Sooo soothing and mind expanding. Thank you Pandora.
By far the best ambient soundscape artist out there. His music is from another world. My favorite work by Steve is Mystic Chords & Sacred Spaces. A close second would be the Serpent's Lair, which takes you on a shamanic journey. Beautiful ethreal composition.

I found Steve Roach on Hearts of Space. They played the entire album The Magnificent Void as one of their shows. I remember the song from Risky Business now that you say it..I will have to revisit Traffic. His music takes me on journeys..ta k e s me travelling

Came across Steve Roach via Satellite Radio- Tangerine Dream, on the Risky Business Soundtrack. I'm thinking about buying one of his CDs and I love the soundtrack from Traffic, dark ambient, kind of spooky but trance-induc i n g . Anyone have suggestions?

Ever since I was blown away by Structures from Silence in 1985, Steve's music has often served as a backdrop to my design work. Seeing Steve live in San Francisco was AWEsome as well. It is amazing to watch him build music on the spot for over an hour. Then in a POOF of smoke, he disappears, allowing his creation(s) the opportunity to continue mesmerizing us for yet another hour. Then, like a magician, he appears from the back of the audience taking us into the next phase.
it's great. i love it. steve and all these other calm meditation music artists are an answered prayer. and thank you pandora.com. i like you better than iTunes.
Stumbled upon Hearts of Space in about 92. Been hooked ever since. The Magnificent Void is one of my all-time favorite pieces.
I've been listening to Steve Roach since the early 1990s, it all started during a massage session. World's Edge, "To the Threshold of Silence." I listen to Steve whenever I can't sleep and he always puts me in an alpha or delta state. Great music for the crazy, too complicated world we live in today. I truly admire musicians who can create such amazing pieces.

Music that provides that wide open eternal space for thought that we all need from time to time. A great relaxing therapy for me.

As a semi-pro musician, I have been immersed in a variety of styles all my life. I stumbled across Steve Roach in the early 80's and have been a fan ever since and own many of his releases or enjoy here on Pandora. Structures was the first to capture my ear and take me away from the ubiquitous aural wallpaper of pop and "smooth jazz" and allow me to visualize and think/create with his amazing ambient textures as a vital part of my environment. Many thanks for your gift.
his music balances the nervous system and entrains the heart.. fundamental musical nourishment. . . bravo.
One of the best!
like breathing.

He is one of the Masters of our times! How lucky we are. Maybe his creations can be preserved forward...
