Stephen Ashbrook

West Coast singer/songwriter Stephen Ashbrook had access to only two records growing up (Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water and Jesus Christ Superstar), both of which were enticing enough to send the California native on a hunt to his local library to expand his musical horizons. Citing heroes as diverse as John Steinbeck, the Rolling Stones, and Winston Churchill, Ashbrook honed his chops amidst the fertile late-'90s Tempe, Arizona alt-rock scene, where he took home The Phoenix Tribune's Best Acoustic Performer title in both 1998 and 2000; he even got to play for President William Jefferson Clinton, at the request of the White House. Known for his rich baritone, smooth falsetto, and penchant for open-road heartland folk-rock in the vein of Tom Petty, the Wallflowers, and Joe Henry, he released an EP, About Last Night, in 1993, followed by a full-length eponymous studio album with his band Satellite in 1995. His solo debut, the critically acclaimed Navigator, arrived in 1998, with Drive and American B-Sides, the latter of which featured members of the Gin Blossoms, the Pistoleros, and Dead Hot Workshop, arriving in 2001 and 2002, respectively. Ashbrook relocated to Portland, Oregon after the arrival of the latter, releasing his first live collection, Double Live @ Long Wong's, in 2004, and White Balloons, his sixth studio album, in 2008. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

Stephen Ashbrook is one of my favorite artist hands down, well along with Colin Hay. And no he DOES NOT sound like the weirdo from CTD's?!?!

Yeh...robert s voice. Is lower.....
I, too, thought it was Brad Roberts. Never considered myself tone deaf. Easy, Tim.
Proof Positive that the majority of people are tone deaf. This guy sounds like the lead from Crash Test Dummies about as much as a Coyote sounds like a Ground Hog!

Dummies
Similar voice as Brad Roberts of Crash Test Dummies

I thought it was Neil Diamond.
Love Stephen Ashbrook, was so pleasantly surprised when he came up on my Greg Brown Station! If anyone isn't familiar with Stephen, I highly recommend Double Live @ Long Wong's - in my opinion his live stuff is so much better than the studio (which is good too)
hey does anyone know if stephen makes his way to the east coast?????
I agree sounds like Crash Yest Dummies to me also. But as you guys said its not him.
m_cd_31
I'm telling you, this has to be the lead singer of The Why Store!
He should play Rocky Mnt. Folks Festival in Lyons, if he hasn't already. He would be well-liked there.
kmorris2837
It is Stephen Ashbrook and I know that for sure because he is my cousin... No pseudonym.
Go Stephen! Tempe brother! Maverick....

Glad to see so many people discovering Steve's music! He is awesome. I've been a fan from the early days when he was playing small gigs on Mill Ave in Tempe, AZ- before Long Wongs. Keep listening- you won't be disappointed ! !
Crash Test Dummies for sure....he probably changed his name.
You are all dummies!
Sounds like lead singer for The Why Store.

Fabulous vocals. I thought this was Brad Roberts...th a n k s for a new find Pandora!
Yeah, it's pretty funny, I hadn't heard him b4 pandora, but this winter I was looking in my small town paper and found out he does shows here pretty often. He's based on Portland, about 60 miles away. He comes up here and has a ski day and then does a PJ party show at a local venue that night. He's a pretty fun artist, has a good local following in Portland.
After hearing this I clicked over and listened to some samples on CD Baby. Listening reminded me of someone else, but I couldn't come up with the name. There it was in the notes, Pete Droge, definitely can hear the connection between the two.

i can't believe this isn't the guy from crash test dummies! they sound the same. i love it
What an avenue to promote good and bad music alike. I can’t imagine a would without music and now a world with out Pandora!
I thought the Crash Test Dummies too, and flipped over to read about him just to see if it was the same guy.
This music is why Pandora is so amazing. I never would have heard of him and now I will definetly go out and buy an album!

>> His voice sounds so much like Brad Roberts from "Crash Test Dummies", it's scary. I dig it.

That's the first thing I thought, too. His voice has a terrific tone.

His voice sounds so much like Brad Roberts from "Crash Test Dummies", it's scary. I dig it.
Very strong voice...it sounds like a cross between Dave Matthews and Matt Nathanson. And if you ask me that is one Hella sound!
