Steelheart

Hailing from Norwalk, CT, Steelheart was one of the last hair metal bands to score a hit with a power ballad, just before Nirvana and their ilk exterminated the genre completely. Originally called Red Alert, the quartet (which included Croatian singer Michael Matijevic, guitarist Chris Risola, bassist James Ward, and drummer Frank Dicostanzo) spent most of the 1980s playing the tri-state area and honing an energetic act. After years of hard work, the bandmates headed west to Los Angeles, signed with MCA Records, and changed their name to Steelheart.

In 1991, Steelheart released their self-titled debut, most notable for its octave-spanning vocals and a pair of hit power ballads: "Never Let You Go," which reached number 14 on the Billboard singles chart; and "She's Gone," which fared well internationally. The band quickly began work on its sophomore effort, Tangled in Reins, which was released a year later. But tragedy was lurking just around the corner -- at a Halloween show opening for Slaughter at McNichol's Arena in Denver, CO, Matijevic was struck in the head by a lighting truss, knocking him to the ground face first and injuring his skull, jaw, nose, and spine. The country's musical climate changed dramatically during Matijevic's recovery, resulting in the band calling it a day shortly thereafter. But by 2000, the group had re-formed and issued a third album, titled Wait, with Matijevic serving as the only original member. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

saw em at a small club in myrtle beach in1992/93 called the Purple Gator this was when the grunge movement had just taken ahold of mainstream rock! bad news for 80's style Metal but it afforded me the chance to chatch these bands before they dissapeared up close and personal instead of huge arenas...Mil l i rolled a tiki bar on stage shared swigs with the audiance and pulled out a huge Bong started doing bong hits on stage...grea t show
Like never before!!
Mili's vocals have never been replicated by no one! Love his range!
I have dreamed of seeing Mili and his band and want that dream to come soon! I love you Mili❤️
I'll Never Let You Go!!! NEVER RP!
Love this band and album!!!! It rocks!!! <3 Michael Matijevic has an amazing voice.
One of the great bands of the 90s.
Saw them open up fo Great White maybe 91, in Columbus, Ohio they freaking rocked! Then Great White kicked a##. Long live rock!

My husband worked with guitarist, Chris Risola before he made it big...and my girlfriend went to high school with him. Always nice to see people you know make it! They don't make bands like this anymore.
I was in the third row at Mcnichols arena when this happened I even tried to yell at him telling him too watch out. It was sad they were a great band.
Most powerful vocals of anyone..no one sings or can sing like Mili.

Yeah, the lead singer did the vocals for mark Wahlbergs character in Rock Star.
LOVE THIS SONG !
Awesome Song!! ;)
howardhunter 3 2
when i tried to fallow i almost blew a nut
Great call on the Tony Harnell/TNT comparison there, Hanshi God of Metal. Another VERY underrated band -- check out TNT's 10,000 Lovers - Harnell could wail and Ronni LeTekro was/is a BEAST on guitar.

Epic
I was lucky enough to see them in concert in 1991. I remember I was front row and the singer was drinking a bottle of jack daniels on stage. He bent down and gave it to me, put it right in my hands. At the time I was like 17, so the security guard immediately grabbed it from me. :)
i still have red alerts demo tape somewhere. That was pre steelheart
listen to their song she's gone. pure power mike.....
benn friends with chris risola for years and he still rocks like he did at showcase in norwalk ct.
Egads I love this song....what a vocal range! Miss the 80's....

Amazing band. What a voice. Love these guys. I hope to see another band like this someday. Tangled in Reins is the best. Not available anywhere except for a $78 import.
Amazing vocal range.
The best vocals I've heard and I'm a big Steve Perry fan. That should say something!!!
all of the "steel dragon" songs were sang by matijevic--j e f f scott soto sang some on the cd soundtrack i believe.
Regarding the movie Rock Star - I was under the impression that Steelhearts singer sang the voice of the guy that took over for the Mark Wahlberg character and that Jeff Scott Soto sang the Mark Whalberg character. Love Steelhearts first 2 albums - the sound on their 2008 release is not the same.
another review FAIL...the frail, talentless Nirvana only send metal underground, where it started and had been for many years, for a few years. then when the grunge fad died and people took off their flannels metal came back and IS STRONGER THAN EVER. i looked around though, and can't figure out what happened to pearl jam and soundgarden and all of them? did they disappear like the ent wives of old?
by the way...they claim a note matijevic hits on "she's gone" is the highest recorded in the rock world--but i believe tony harnell's (from TNT) note just before the guitar solo in "tonight i'm falling for you" is a half-step higher.
prob the best male rock voice in history. yeah i said that.
one of the best power ballads from one of the best periods in time for music. hair metal rocks!
"... Nirvana and their ilk..." HAHAH
armi0024
One of the most amazing performers I've ever seen, even without fancy lighting and pyros, Steelheart puts on one of the most energetic shows you will ever see. Just wish they would come to Hawaii!!!
cthuskyfan01
Lonnie you are so right. If anyone wants to argue about music and quality, ask them the last time they've been to a sold out show for anyone from the 90s or 2K era. When bands like Poison, Crue, Cinderella, etc can still sell more tix than new groups, one can easily see how they connect with people. The 80's groups actually could sing and play instruments along with bringing awesome stage presence to shows. No lip syncing posers dancing around pretending.
We need to be thankfull that WE was apart of the 80's and 90's Hairband era!! Because there will never be another! All these bands had a God Given Talent and They used it to it's Fullest!!! God Bless All of Them. In my opinion it was the last era of bands with lead singers, who could actully sing. Steelheart was one of my favorite Bands, along with Black & Blue and Kix and Dokken and The Crue and Def Leppard and-ah HeL I can go on and on... P.S Ghostman we are all old but yet so young at Heart.

I love this song. Brings back memories. Love 80s hair bands!!

diggin the sound. you guys are right about Rock Star.

ok, everytime i hear this band i can't help but think of the movie "rock star". i absolutely love michael's vocals, i've always loved singers who could belt it out balls-to-the - w a l l , male or female and hate that steelheart is not still together notwithstand i n g their "genre" of music is "over". i still think if michael were well enough to sing, that they could still make it as a band, if only he could find a band with the balls to try...
first time i ever listened to them was today, never let you go is awesome:)
