The Steeldrivers

Specializing in a unique mix of what might be called bluegrass soul, the SteelDrivers have featured a group of veteran Nashville session players including Richard Bailey on banjo, Mike Fleming on bass, Mike Henderson on mandolin, Tammy Rogers on fiddle, and Chris Stapleton on guitar and lead vocals. Stapleton's bluesy, hoarse, and Tom Waits-like singing really set the SteelDrivers apart in the often generic contemporary bluegrass genre, where a high and lonesome tenor lead vocal is typically heard. Stapleton's passionate croaking gave the SteelDrivers an authentic, aged, and rootsy feel. The band quickly became a favorite on the bluegrass festival circuit and released a debut album, simply called The SteelDrivers and consisting of all original compositions, on Rounder Records early in 2008. A second Rounder release, Reckless, appeared in 2010. Before recording their next album, the SteelDrivers went through some major lineup shifts, with Stapleton and Henderson both leaving. They were replaced by Gary Nichols and Brent Truitt, respectively, and their next album, 2013's Hammer Down, couldn't help but sound different. Nichols proved to be a fine replacement, though, and the band kept rolling along. The SteelDrivers dug deeper into their soulful side on 2015's The Muscle Shoals Recordings, recorded in the Alabama town where some of the biggest and best R&B hits of the '60s and '70s were cut. The album also featured singer and songwriter Jason Isbell on two songs. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi

You play some of the most beautiful Bluegrass that I've ever heard. Chris has a sound like no other. Simply profound and inspiring to the soul. I can't get through the day without a little dose of that soulful, deep cutting Steeldrivers sound. Many thanks for the joy you bring to our ears!

Re "If it Hadn't Been For Love"--love the song. But why do we get that little frisson at love that turns to death?

Fairly new to the this bluegrass sound in the last 4 or 5 yrs. My dear mother loved to listen to when i was younger. This band can freaking play there asses off. Been a narrow minded blues playing wanabe but these since I heard the band on Pandora this is my favorite station, even bought a banjo and can't put it down. Can't play like them but am determined to get better every day i pick it to get reacquainted again

I've got to stand up tall before I'm done... wrap these hands of mine around a gun... chase the taste of bondage from my tongue...

The next time they come to North Carolina I'd like to know about it. Stapleton's voice reminds me of the lead singer for Soundgarden.

I like the band, new line up or not. I will also be watching for Chris Stapleton's new solo CD, coming out in July!

They lost their edge with the new line up and I was disappointed in the album but they are still good. Just not as good.

The new album is a gigantic disappointme n t . I had hoped that even with a new lead vocalist they would still be as good, but the new music lacks everything that made the Steeldrivers great. Keeping my Steeldrivers channel, but giving every track that comes up from Hammerdown the thumbs-down.
