Reinhold Glière

Russian composer Reinhold Glière (1875-1956) was a dominant figure in the early history of the Soviet Union. Nationalistic in spirit and essentially a post-romantic stylist, Glière studied with Rimsky-Korsakov, Taneyev, and Arensky, and in turn taught Prokofiev, Mosolov, and Khachaturian. His most famous works are the ballet The Red Poppy (1928) and his Symphony No. 3 in B minor "Il'ya Murometz" (1913). Glière served as Chairman of the organizing committee of the Soviet Composer's Union from 1938 to 1948, and although he secretly protected many significant composers from Stalin's abuses, Glière's complicity as a Soviet bureaucrat has unwittingly hurt his posthumous reputation. ~ Uncle Dave Lewis , Rovi
