Spock's Beard

Spock's Beard began in 1992 when brothers Neal (lead vocals) and Al Morse (guitar) teamed up with drummer Nick D'Virgilio. After self-financing their first album, bassist Dave Meros joined, and The Light was recorded in 1994. Consisting of four lengthy songs, this debut album was well received by progressive rock fans, but received little public acclaim. Ryo Okumoto joined in 1995 to play keyboards. In 1996, The Official Bootleg was released, a live performance containing the entire first album plus one song from the upcoming second album. 1996 also saw the band sign with various record labels around the world, in addition to releasing Beware of Darkness, which contains the same style of music, but in shorter pieces (all ten minutes or less, except for the 15-plus-minute last track). Spock's Beard's third studio album, The Kindness of Strangers, was released at the end of 1997; Day for Night followed in 1999 and V was issued a year later. Deciding they had the experience and chops to attempt a concept album, they spent the next few years putting together Snow. The double album revolved around the title character, an albino teenager that could possibly be the messiah. Taking a much more detailed approach to the material, the band had a difficult two years writing the album and was rewarded with a strong promotional push from Metal Blade Records. Following Snow, Neal Morse became a born again Christian and left the band. The remaining members quickly regrouped, however, with D'Virgilio assuming the lead vocal duties and managed to release Feeling Euphoria the following year. 2004 saw the rerelease of their first three albums and in 2005 they delivered both a new studio offering (Ocatane) and Live in 2005: Gluttons for Punishment. ~ David White, Rovi

Pandora doesn't have all of the albums and that makes me mad
nice
Seriously, they don't have Day For Night?
pandora's coverage of them is so pathetic, theres so much missing.
Yes more Neal era! Once they came to be, it took very little time for The Beard to become my new all time fave group. Been to many shows, smoked up with Dave and Alan, carried Ryo on my shoulders for his Keytar solo... even had dinner with the D'Virgilio's (Nick is easily the best rock drummer nobody knows about) but Neal was always the least approachable . That said, for me The Beard without Neal is like Pink Floyd without Roger. Still better then most bands, but it's just not the same...
Seems to be quite a bit of the Neil Morse years missing here. How about adding something besides the Snow CD?
Good music, and the best band name ever.
Nice Pandora, just had the Whirlwind (Evermore), Snow (Long Time Suffering) back to back for my listneing pleasure!! Snow is probably the greatest album ever written that no one has heard!!

Without Neal Morse Spock's Beard is a middle of the road rock 'n roll band living off of its former glory. Ashame.
Progressive at its best in my opinion.
Why does Neal Morse's link lead to Kenny Neal?
raidnation
Yes Pandora Please!!! Why can't you add some earlier Spock's Beard work? I listen to prog rock for the musical qualities, not the lyrical ones. I'm not religious AT ALL. However I saw Neal Morse play recently (with Mike Portnoy) in a small venue and loved the music.
Transatlanti c and SB are not Christian bands, they are prog bands. Yes talks about god and divinity in their songs and has been since the early 70's and they are not a christian band.
So what if any band is a Christian band? If their music is good I frankly do not care what the lyrics are about. I am more interested in their melodies, instrumental l y and lyrically.
doesn't transatlanti c have Portnoy from DreamTheatre on drums ? he is jewish... in a Christian band? ;)
yes what about V i seen them open for DT 2 times in 2000
great show ..met Neal at the 4th&B back then...
Coming to a parallel universe near you...
littlechico
after spocks who really effin cares rock on neal isay!As for beard thay are still great!!!!!!! ! !
I thought they were a Christian Band, because of Neal Morse. But your bio explained how that came about after Snow. Thanks for the research and explanation of the band history. As far as I know, Transatlanti c , w i t h Neal Morse,is a Christian Band. Sometimes it's hard to figure out unless the lyrics are Bible based. Ajalon I belive is also a Christian prog rock band. Play on! Uncle Harry

Hey Pandora - along with the requests for some of their earlier stuff, you might want to take a minute and update the band bio. It ends in 2005, but they've released more material since then, including one of the best concert DVD's going.
Yeah, V is probably my favorite album. Too bad it's no where to be seen on here
toilpainter
As much as I like Neil's voice and writing, they are doing a great job ( it's different than their Neil era tunes ). They're still great in concert and their latest album, SB is great, IMO.
The album V is great. Who else would open with an epic song like, "At the End of the Day?"

spocks beard has gone above and beyond. Kinda sucks neil is no longer involved...C a n they pull outta this?
I agree S McConnell, Snow IS one of the best by anyone ever, it is great! Morse is so talented from his work with SB, solo and my favorite, Transatlanti c ! Peace.
I love the V album, but I don't think we should dismiss Snow - one they do have. That is a Neal Morse gem that in my book is one of the best ever by anyone. Because it is a concept album it does work best in its entirety as opposed to breaking it into singles.
Agree with the other comments. Bring on V and the older albums.
The V Album and Beware of Darkness...n o t to mention "The Light".
We need the V album.

All Spock's Beard music is wonderful!

To Fuse, more fusion sounding to me on one cut?
geman
Very Very Nice, They sound refreshed with a fusion, King Crimson sound!
Ok, no update on the Spock's Beard albums as of yet....
Let's bombard pandora with requests for REAL Spock's Beard and REAL Neal Morse!!
Wow, this makes no sense. You have none of Neal's late stuff and you have none of SB's early stuff. What gives?
viron_x
Reading these comments was funny, since listening to them I liked them but was thinking they would sound better if the music was more prog. Guess I'm just not hearing the right songs!
Yes, the music presented here does not fully represent what Spock's Beard was all about. Their earlier work was simply amazing. Prog fans delight!
Ditto here as well, for TL, BoD, KoS, & V.
btiner
Ditto! Need the Light, Beware of Darkness, Kindness of Strangers, V, etc.

Pandora, you need to add this band's earlier work with Neal Morse as their front-man, which is well crafted symphonic progressive music. The latest material, sans Morse, is good straight-up rock, but Spock's Beard fans will appreciate having their earlier work available here.
