Jazz vocalist Sophie Milman is a sophisticated and torchy singer with a bent toward American popular songbook standards. Born in Russia of Jewish heritage, Milman spent much of her childhood in Israel, where her parents moved after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In the early '90s, Milman's family emigrated once again to Toronto, Canada. Having sung from a young age, the then teenage Milman was already familiar with such iconic vocalists as Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and others. In 2004, a chance performance at "Real Divas" night -- a local Toronto jazz series -- brought Milman to the attention of producer Bill King, who then secured a few showcase performances for the burgeoning star. Subsequently, Milman signed a recording contract with Linus Entertainment and released her self-titled debut album. Make Someone Happy followed on JVC in 2007. ~ Matt Collar, Rovi
Sophie Milman is a natural. It's not surprising that she has lived on three continents because her vitality reflects breadth and sensitivity, along with swinging ability. I love her voice and personality.
just saw a documentary on Netflix called Jews in Baseball, while the credits rolled, was about to hit the eject button when along came Sophie singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame and did she make it swing! She's gonna go into heavy rotation....
Just saw yesterday, new album AND tour in Sept. 2011. Every time that voice starts I stop dead in my tracks. 'Torch' has to be her middle name.

Echoing Gregory, WOW is the operative word. Coincidentally, Diana Krall is the next artist on the turntable (a favorite), but Ms. Milman is in the same league...
new to Sophie Milman - i love the old school jazz vocals!

Saw her live 2 years ago at Lincoln Center Dizzys Club Coca-Cola. Great performance, would love to see her perform again. Although I was very surprised she did not do 'Lonely In New York' since we were overlooking Central Park right on Broadway. I'm a fan for life.
She is definitely best fresh new voice in vocal jazz! Go and enjoy singing Sophie!

Milman offers an amazing mix of Kazan's 'smoke' with yet a light, delightful feel of joy and fun. A true delight to the soul from a serious talent I hope to hear more of soon.
