Soft Cell

Art students Marc Almond and Dave Ball formed Soft Cell, a synth pop duo famed for its uniquely sleazy electronic sound, in Leeds, England in 1980. Originally, vocalist Almond and synth player Ball teamed to compose music for theatrical productions, and as Soft Cell, their live performances continued to draw heavily on the pair's background in drama and the visual arts. A self-financed EP titled Mutant Moments brought the duo to the attention of Some Bizzare label head Stevo, who enlisted Daniel Miller to produce their underground hit single "Memorabilia" the following year.

It was the next Soft Cell effort, 1981's "Tainted Love," that brought the duo to international prominence; written by the Four Preps' Ed Cobb and already a cult favorite thanks to Gloria Jones' soulful reading, the song was reinvented as a hypnotic electronic dirge and became the year's best-selling British single, as well as a major hit abroad. The group's debut LP, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, was also enormously successful, and was followed by the 1982 remix collection Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing.

While 1983's The Art of Falling Apart proved as popular as its predecessors, the LP's title broadly hinted at the internal problems plaguing the duo; prior to the release of 1984's This Last Night in Sodom, Soft Cell had already broken up. Almond immediately formed the electro-soul unit Marc & the Mambas; another group, Marc Almond & the Willing Sinners, followed before the singer finally embarked on a solo career in the late '80s. After a number of years of relative inactivity, Ball later resurfaced in the techno outfit the Grid. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

I think it's cool that an art student is part of a band, not the cliche of music major or something or perform at bars

OH! I remember what I was gonna say. There was PLENTY of music from the 80s' that I couldn't stand at ALL, some still to this day BUT, majority of those tunes that I would never spend a nickel on then or change the radio station as fast as I could when I heard them, when I hear them today the take me back to a better, happier and easier time in my life and I have a new found respect for them and may even purchase them on some form of medium. Hopefully we grow older, we grow wiser. No?

@milosdad - I think most people are speaking in 'general'. I was a teen all through the 80s' and compare all music to that era. I have a hard time with todays music but of course there is plenty good music out there. I think a lot of people are bias to their generation. ALSO as time marches on it becomes more and more difficult to NOT sound like somebody or something that that has already been done. perfect example, people who say,Didn't so&so do this song in 2011? when what they are really

If anyone thinks today's music sucks they are not listening enough. I can find great music in any decade. Perhaps the thing that's missing for some is the youth and lack of obligation. Those things tend to make all aspects of our lives that much better.
When I listen to stuff from the 70's and 80's, I get nostalgic and sometimes a little sad but at least I do have the music to help take me back.

Sleazy? No way! I had a girlfriend from Norway who turned me on to a extended, I think German, version of this before it even came to the U.S. I was hooked.

Reminds me of my crush for over a year when I first met him last November when I went to go see Carrie the movie he was doing the ticket stubs inside and ask me about my book. I wonder where did our love go by when I never got to see him all the time:-( but last month I got to see him twice. Once was with my sister I couldn't talk to him while my sister was around or flirt with him also
