Among the earliest and most influential Delta bluesmen to record, Skip James was the best-known proponent of the so-called Bentonia school of blues players, a genre strain invested with as much fanciful scholarly "research" as any. Coupling an oddball guitar tuning set against eerie, falsetto vocals, James' early recordings could make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Even more surprising was when blues scholars rediscovered him in the '60s and found his singing and playing skills intact. Influencing everyone from a young Robert Johnson (Skip's "Devil Got My Woman" became the basis of Johnson's "Hellhound on My Trail") to Eric Clapton (who recorded James' "I'm So Glad" on the first Cream album), Skip James' music, while from a commonly shared regional tradition, remains infused with his own unique personal spirit. ~ Cub Koda, Rovi
I thought it was Canned Heat playing when I heard this song..now I know where they got their sound from, and all these years I thought Canned Heat was so original voice wise...
Ever grateful for the movie Ghost World for introducing me to Skip James' music.

Thought I was listening to the blues with Clapton, Waters, & Pink. Saw a poster of Robert Johnson in Jenkins Bar, Athens, TN. So made his station and WOW! Hearing the original stuff is wonderous and it is so cool to hear tiny bits of voice and instrument that were picked up, embellished, and made famous by following generations. Pandora certainly has expanded my music intrest and appreciation. Thanks.
Yola My Blues Away sounds a lot like "Killing Floor Blues." Great tune. It's cool to hear these really old guys and see all of the influences they had on later players. Kind of like drinking straight from the fountainhead.
What a cool piece of American history forever frozen for generations to come...I wonder if he ever realized that these recordings would one day become something so special.
it was years ago when they recorded this music. Skip was never famous in his own lifetime, the release of his recordings coincided with an economic depression. The technology just wasnt there at the time to make a pristine recording. You should check out Wim Wender's "Soul of a man" video for more blues information.

this is truly a spooky recording; it sounds angelic in delivery, yet raw in substance, if that makes any sense!
