Harrison Birtwistle (born 1934 in Accrington, England), one of the most important British composers to emerge in the second half of the 20th century, is known for his adherence to an uncompromising modernist aesthetic and his willingness to embrace new and experimental techniques. He has written in a number of genres but tends to favor larger forms such as orchestral tone poems and opera, many of which are concerned with mythological or legendary subjects. Major works include Panic, for saxophone and orchestra; Silbury Air and Earth Dances, for orchestra; and the operas Punch and Judy, The Mask of Orpheus, and Gawain. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi
