Silversun Pickups

Los Angeles indie rockers whose organic but richly atmospheric sound (and their subsequent critical and commercial success) helped put the uber-hip Silver Lake scene on the map, Silversun Pickups were formed in 2002, initially using the name A Couple of Couples. The original handle reflected the fact that in the band's first lineup, lead guitarist Brian Aubert was romantically involved with drummer Elvira Gonzales, while rhythm guitarist Jack Kennedy was in a relationship with bassist Nikki Monninger. However, after both couples broke up, the group went through some personnel changes, and in 2003 Gonzales and Kennedy left the band, with keyboard player Joe Lester taking over for the absent guitarist and Christopher Guanlao becoming their new drummer.

Taking on the new name Silversun Pickups, the group became regulars at trendy rock clubs such as Spaceland and the Silverlake Lounge, and developed a committed fan following. In July 2005, Silversun Pickups released their debut EP, a six-song EP (seven if you include the hidden bonus track) called Pikul. The EP was released by noted indie label Dangerbird Records, which brought out the group's first full-length album, Carnavas, in September 2006. Carnavas fared well enough to land two songs in the Top Ten of Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart, "Well Thought Out Twinkles" and "Lazy," and peaked at number 80 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart, while the group toured in support, sharing stages with with Wolfmother, Snow Patrol, and OK Go in the United States and opening for the Foo Fighters in the U.K.

The success of Carnavas set the stage for Swoon, which appeared in April 2009 and made an impressive debut, entering the Top 200 Albums chart at number seven. The album's success led to the band being nominated for a Best New Artist prize at the 2010 Grammy Awards, which became a subject of angry and bemused conversation among the group's fans, given that Silversun Pickups were far from newcomers by then. May 2012 brought another studio set, Neck of the Woods (produced by Jacknife Lee), and high-profile dates at many major music festivals in North America, though bassist Nikki Monninger was forced to sit out a number of shows in 2012 and 2013 due to pregnancy, with Sarah Negahdari of the Happy Hollows temporarily taking her place. In 2014, Dangerbird released The Singles Collection, a compilation that collected non-LP tracks from the band; the album appeared on CD and as a digital download, while a special edition was also issued as a vinyl box set. In 2015, Silversun Pickups formed their own label, New Machine Records, which they launched with their fourth full-length album, Better Nature. ~ Mark Deming

Remember the first time I heard this song thought it was new smashing pumpkins...f e e l s like a garage rock. Drug infused rifts, whaling guitar soft lyrics to a steady beat. It's a jam.

I can see the SP comparison and lets face it everyone is influenced by someone but I also can hear some Pixie/Sonic Youth influence with some stop and go. BTW the fact that your influenced by someone musically isn't a bad thing I mean it's not like Silversun Pickups are playing SP covers or something! I heard The Pit and I was hooked!

You really said a mouthful jackass

This is THE best emo softcore pop alternative indy band of the post punk screamo era. I'm sure y'all will agree with that simple truth...

excited to see them again @ Kerfuffle in June!

Yeah, I'm digging this one! I'm glad they're still creating great music.
Hey now @ astrozombies 0 0 , you're nuts to say the Pumpkins are a mediocre band. Billy is an amazing writer, poet, musician . The band is incredibly creative and talented - talk about music that makes you feel! You have to listen to more than Disarm to see their true talent.

Songs are good for listening, but why can't we have something to add visuals as well. Seems like a good idea to combine Music and TV.

This is one badass song!!!

I love this band...

Saw them live in Fresno They put on a good show

I don't how anyone who is a fan of this type of music can disparage bands that paved the way for them. Silversun pickups obviously blazed their own trail but smashing pumpkins was instrumental and really at the helm of this scene as the wave broke . Respect musicians man , don't generalize their discography and make broad statements like " they suck " or are generic ..these guys did things none of you keyboard warriors ever did. They contributed , no matter If you think its s**t, or not its still

Ha! Are you kidding me, Smashing Pumpkins are one of the greatest 90s rock bands of all time. Second to Nirvana on most lists I would say and have an argument for greatest. Silversun Pickups is another great band but come on don't knock the Pumpkins. Are you a fan of Hole?

Love thier sound, good jams

Really like this band.

Anyone else seeing them live with Cage The Elephant and Foals?

My #1 favorite band since I discovered them years ago.

I am really liking this band. Not Smashing Pumpkins, newer version of similar sound perhaps. But I've been around a while... Alt rock sounds like it always has since late 80's. Yeah, I'm that old!

These guys have such a unique sound, it's awesome

damn they're my band

F**king awesome group of artists ! I hate hearing people comparing them to Smashing Pieholes. The pickups are musicians who convey emotion and can make you feel that, even if only instrumental y . The pumpkins are a mediocre radio band with a whiny b**ch for a front man.

I really enjoy this band, keep pumping out the great tunes!

Reminds me of early Smashing Pumpkins

First 3 albums/eps were excellent, Neck of the Woods was OK, not great. IMO Better Nature is not very good - sorry uber fans - I'll await all the insults. It's over produced, totally controlled and too clean. To me, a key element to this band is the pull between the tight rhythm overlain by Brian's loose voice and sometimes uncontrolled guitar parts - he's a good guitarist and I really liked his early style, but Better Nature is just boring and predictable, a lot of synth too...

Very skilled band. Great guitar player and a strong voiced bass player as well. Like 'em lots.

They alright but I prefer smashing pumpkins

By far, of my very favorites of all time. The emotion they evoke with words and music is surreal.

great song...cant wait for new album.

I hear the comments on Smashing Pumpkins - similar sounds and the such, but to me they have so much more texture. I think they picked up where SP couldnt go. Cant wait for new album.

I love travelling solo to these guys, its the only time I can turn it up as loud as I need to :)

Probably my current favorite band... such good lyrics and harmonies.
Report as inappropriate
such a cool sound, none of the other bands in their niche even come close. Bloody Mary and dream at tempo 119 are my favorites. the chick bass player is cute too :)

Love this band saw them at s Festival in Tucson AZ with 30 seconds to Mars in 2011-when will a new album be released?

Same initials as Smashing Pumpkins. Coincidence?

Silversun Pickups Neck of the woods

The pit

To me that song reminds me of Fallout 3.

Nice to know you work alone is my favorite by them. Keep on doing doing your unique sound
Report as inappropriate
The only reasont they would sound anything like Smashing Pumpkins is because Brian and Billy have SLIGHTLY similar voices. But there isn't a very big similarity.
Anyways, I love these guys!!!!! They're my favorite band for sure!!!! Can't wait for their new album :)

I love all their music! It always puts me in a good mood. Awesome road trip music. I don't know why everyone says they sound like the Smashing Pumpkins. They have a unique style and the vocals are on point, I think the vocals sound like Coheed and Cambria or Muse.
Report as inappropriate
Funny, I never thought they sounded like the Pumpkins until I heard "1979" again on XM yesterday. There's some influence, but they have their own sound. Still this guys rock and I love the guitar work.
Report as inappropriate
They DO sound like the smashing pumpkins... Back when the pumpkins still had some smash and scream in them.

Add the tech aspect akin to radio head and muse and you get a nice combo.

Surprisingly , this combination works even in acoustic. Very nice "elf" punk.
Report as inappropriate
They are having some real good stuff; like them best when they sound between radio head and pumpkins
Report as inappropriate
People say they're a smashing pumpkins knock off. Sigh...

Does sound a bit Pixieish, reminiscent of Kim Deal vocally
