Led by former Generation X member Tony James, the new wave group Sigue Sigue Sputnik raised selling out to an art form. The concept behind Sigue Sigue Sputnik was simple: the band adopted a postmodern, ironic style and sound, and marketed it to the hilt, saturating the media with slogans and interviews. James didn't even intend the band to be musical; he recruited Martin Degville, Neal X, Chris Cavanagh, and Ray Mayhew partially because they lacked extensive musical experience. After a publicity campaign designed to solicit a record contract, the band signed with EMI; they released their first single, "Love Missile F1-11," in early 1986, and it hit number three on the U.K. charts. Sigue Sigue Sputnik sold the space between tracks to advertisers on their debut album, Flaunt It. Despite the massive marketing campaign, the album fell on deaf ears, as did the more serious follow-up, Dress for Excess (1988), which featured the slogan "This time it's music" on the album cover. The group split soon after the release of Dress for Excess. James was a member of Sisters of Mercy for a short time in 1991. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
I'm in my 40s now; but when I waqs a teenage wnna be skater I was realy into Tiple S. I can't remember which one of the two drummers was Billy Idols drummer for for several albums. My kids only recognized them from Ferris Bullers Day Off
I'm just learning now that they weren't musicians; I bought this album when I was 10 because it sounded like the music in Howard the Duck, and I thought they were the coolest ever. I guess the concept went over my head.
I liked Love Missile F1-11, but after hearing a few tracks, it all sounds the same with the same beat and the staccato stuttering and Chuck Berry guitar.
this as is still beyond this time as the concept to the reason for the band with its sound breaks the realm of what can be to what will be the band is the greatest of its kind for it is the only band of its kind I have know and listen to this band from the moment that it hit and it still breaks my head open and it leaks into my hands
I have a long running affinity for this band and everything everyone in front of me said is right on the money! (And that rarely if ever happens, thanks for saving me a bunch of writting everyone!)
Not sure if Idol "used to roll with them". But, Idol was in Generation X with Tony James, who started Sig Sig Sput, so, 'there you go!'
Speaking of Idol: i just saw a recent show with him. He's back with original guitarist Steve Stevens. The show was great and Idol, except for his face, looks to be 20! I mean he is ripped! I hope i look that good when i'm pushing 55-60. "Flesh for fantasy"!
this drug addict/musician I knew introduced me to them, the reason I kind of like it is because its so different, even today, still hilarious some times though, I thought Billy Idol used to roll with them

The best of one of the worst bands to come out of England, and I say that as a fan. Where is Sci-Fi Sex Stars, best album cover in Rock and Roll.

For a band allegedly lacking musical experience and having a debut album that was "not serious," Sigue Sigue Sputnik had a terrific and original sound ("space guitar"). I think they were one of the best "concept bands" ever. The whole thing of embracing technology and hedonism kind of prefigured the ultra-hip Mondo 2000 magazine that later came out of the Bay Area. The transgender themes were also a bit ahead of their time.
