Shooting Star

Muscular '80s rockers Shooting Star formed in Kansas City late in the 1970s with vocalist/guitarist Van McLain, guitarist Gary West, violin player Charles Waltz, bassist Ron Verlin, and drummer Steve Thomas. The group signed to Virgin before the end of the decade and delivered their self-titled debut album late in 1979; the single "You've Got What I Need" was a modest hit, as was "Hollywood" from 1981's Hang on for Your Life, but Shooting Star disbanded by 1985. Four years later, McLain and Verlin were present at the formation of another edition of the band, with vocal duties being handled by newcomer Keith Mitchell.

The new Shooting Star debuted in 1989 with the single "Touch Me Tonight," which became their biggest hit (a not-quite awe-inspiring number 76); the group's sixth album overall, It's Not Over, was released in 1991. ~ John Bush, Rovi

How these guys never got to be huge stars is beyond my comprehensio n .

Saw them in Syracuse in 1981(?) with Cheap Trick; Van & Gary were great musicians and performers. Charlie Waltz was 5 shades of awesome on violin and other instruments; he pulled out the tympani (!!) and traded solos with Steve Thomas on Last Chance and brought the crowd to its feet!! Bring It On was also superlative, and in my mind - and most others - their musicianship blew 'Trick off the stage! Agree w/JC, one of the best bands that never made it. Wasn't for lack of talent!!
Great song Takes me back to my teenage years. Goodtimes.
its going back a few years but i saw them the first time in kirksville, mo at a college concert....v e r y few people knew them but their show was great....the college had them back a couple years later....the y got more money for their show and actually had a warm up act then....two of the greatest shows ive ever saw....
Saw them last night in OP KS. They played some songs they hadn't performed live in years, including their Christmas song. The new singer nailed it, and Van and the boys reminded me why I spent my youth and meager paychecks following their shows
THE best band to come from Missouri! Love the Daredevils, but Shooting Star ROCKED!
Saw them in Rolla, MO around 1983, awesome concert. Steve Thomas was one of the most amaazing drummers I've ever seen, the drum solo on 'Last Chance' was absolutely epic in concert!
Great band. Had some of the greatest songs ever in Rock.
Good band with alot of good tunes. They deserved a better bio then this. They also deserved more success, but guess when you don't sell out that happens sometimes. Hang on for your life is an awesome song
Saw them at Busch Stadium 1980, should have had more success than they did.
Going too see them in Wabash,In with April Wine on 9/1/2012
Hang on for your life is straight ahead, in your face rock and roll album; love it!
Saw them in 82 in Hays kansas warmed up for night ranger, in my opinion they blew night ranger away.
Lousy bio for the band! No mention of Last Chance? A true rock classic! (FYI) They are still touring! Seen em' in St. Louis recently.
saw them numerous times,, including the farewell concert in '85 on the the youtube vid you can see me in the front row.. ;)
Saw this group on more than 1 occasion back in the 80's. They rock out, best band that never made it

I saw when in Houston back in the early 80's then again in Cincinnati, and last time in the northwest burbs of Chicago and each time they were better than the last time I saw them.(note this was over a 30yr span). This is a band that reminds me of good times and great music.
I had the opportunity to see the band in Cincinnati many years ago at Summerfest ""They Blew Me Away"" The next day I was scouring the countryside looking for thier music!! I have wore out many LPs of one of the "TIGHTEST" and "BEST" bands ever!!
Van was a year ahead of me in high school(class president by the way)
They played at Shawnee Mission South.....Sh a N a N a type music before the
kicked it over.....saw them as many times as I could at the Old One Block West.....gre a t job guys
Nothing like the original line up. Gary West was one of the best singers at that time. Mistical combination with original violinist and original drummer.
My first concert!! 1982. Those first two albums are still two of my favorites. I saw their farewell tour in '87. And saw them again in '93. Lots of material for our garage bands growing up.
One of my favorite concerts from my early rockin' days in the '80's! They have a ton of great songs. I think they would have some great songs for the TV show Supernatural . Something like Bring it On, Tonight, Flesh and Blood, Breakout, Hang on for Your Life Tonight. I could go on. Getting ready to rock out with them on my home from work. Keep on Rockin'
Holy crap..... Why haven't i ever heard this before.

I never saw them in concert but learned of them when I moved to the KC area in 1981. Loved the music then and still do today!
I agree. saw them a couple times in the 80's. great band!
I saw this band in the early eighties, @ The Rainbow music Hall in Denver after they made the "Hang On For Your Life" album. They put on a good show. Wish they would of made it. A lot of talent!
