Sergey Prokofiev

April 23, 1891 - March 5, 1953
born in Russia, composed during the Modern period
Sergey Prokofiev (1891-1953) was among the most prolific and original composers of the first half of the 20th century, excelling in virtually every musical genre. Many of his early works were modernist, and like many Russian artists, he was censored during the Soviet regime, but he was able to adapt to its restrictions while retaining his artistic integrity. His best-known works include the cantata Alexander Nevsky, the film score Lieutenant Kijé, the ballet Romeo and Juliet, and his "Classical" and Fifth symphonies. His children's tale Peter and the Wolf is one of the most familiar and beloved pieces of 20th century music. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi

I can't help crying through some of Nevsky

peter and the wolf :D
toddh806
Is the pianist humming as he plays? (early in the piece)
I saw Lugansky playing Rachmaninov and Prokofiev at the Gilmore Festival and he was absolutely amazing.
Head over heels in love with Prokofiev since insisting my mom play Peter and the Wolf every single day for a good chunk of my sixth year of life - 'til the gift she'd given me of that record drove her plum bonkers, and she bought me loads of other Prokofiev delights. Love that mom of mine.

I want "For the Love of 3 Oranges" by Prokoviev.
I enjoy the R&J sounds, as well as his emotionally inspired other pieces.
willowbarb
Looking for works by Prokofiev OTHER THAN Romeo & Juliette
Listen to my Elf-Rune
darcie29tudo r
Most evocative of the "Modern Russians" He also has wonderful, lilting folk dances. I love falling asleep listening to Prokofiev and Edvard Grieg
The Civilization V music theme when playing as Russia sounds suspiciously like this.
Played this with orchestra it was an amazing experience :)
Was this in a Disney movie?
lkgrebnel
I, for one, fully appreciate him. A long flight to Argentina was made tollerable by the entire Romeo & Juliet ballet. . . thx
pbb.wolf
I really do wish more people could appreciate Prokofiev as much as we do.
I am part of the Los Angeles children's chorus and LA opera organization s I feel that when I had to sing Juliet's part in Romeo and Juliet and the ballet performers went on and danced this part a new world opened up in my eyes
ezramon17
Prokofiev had to hire people for his orchestratio n s he found it so difficult, according to Shostakovich (who might be exaggerating as was his way).
Prokofiev's 5th symphony is perhaps my favorite piece of music any fan of his should listen to it.
jjbr921
Dave--agreed , and his work is amazing. Be careful, though...one of the reasons many don't listen to classical music is the I know best review. Do you want a world where the Beatles hopelessly simple I Saw Her Standing There never existed? Perhaps, but I'm glad it's in the rotation.
For anyone who thinks classical music is boring, listen to Lt. Kife and you will realize most of modern pop, which, for the most part is simply based on three chords (the 1st, 4th and 5th of the major scale) is hopelessly based on a very simple cookie cutter structure, repeated in most songs today. Prokofiev's genius is all the more evident when you consider the restrictions placed on him under Communism.
I remember listening to this when i was younger trying to fall asleep to wonderful music
One paragraph? Really?
Loved his work since I was a child. Death of Tybalt from Romeo and Juliet is one of my favorite movements ever.
jamessr
He is the Einstein of composers, like Igor Stravinsky, way ahead of his
contemporari e s . Philip Glass is also of the species and greatly inspired
by them especially when I am painting or drawing. James,
Amazing is a gross understateme n t . After a half hour of listening to this music and reading about the life of it's brilliant creator, I am humbled and respectfully silent.
A genius @ work&play; I am so humbly jealous of his creativity and artistry but too impressed not to give my full compliments and heartfelt appreciation . Thank you Mr. Prokofiev.

I think the bio should probably read the film score Alexander Nevsky,
the cantata Lieutenant Kije... not the other way around.
oleg_viatkin
Great Russian composer!
great composer... pathetic bio
How does a composer ranked "among the most prolific and original composers of the first half of the 20th century" rate only a single paragraph bio? There is more on Wikipedia. Please.
Best composer of the 20th century :)
Yes, Eisenstadt's movie is a classic - he commissioned Prokofiev to write the score. If you get a chance, see the movie. Black and white, rather crude compared with today's movies, but it is nothing short of gripping. My favorite scene is where the organist (gnarled and threatening) is hauling his 'portable' organ across the ice with the advancing army. The Russian version of bagpipes, yes?
his Alexansder Nevsky was a film score most often heard reorchestrat e d for symphonic performance. The 1933 movie was stirring propoganda creating a 10th century hero fighting Germans (teutonic knights) preparing russians for the war certain to come - it did arrive in 1942. The scenes of the knights charging across the frozen lake with prokovievs incredible music is unforgettabl
Poor Prokofiev! He had the misfortune to die on the very same day that Soviet dictator Josef Stalin died. Otherwise, his death would have been big news.
jennyl2011
I love his music so much, it's ridiculous. Prokofiev matches my taste about 98%. Piano music, Ballets, Symphonies, and so much more, my favorite music of all time. He even made a Flute Sonata, which I've played.
Piece of Sonata under communism nice with Robert's emotional view by Peter to the Wolf, Prokofiev.
I love Prokofiev. My favorite piece of his is the Violin Sonata in F Minor. If you haven't heard this piece, go now and listen to it! It is SO creative and SO beautiful.
robtsmd
He is one special composer whose end of life was cruel under Communism.

klosnj11 Great that you like him.
What is your favorite piece?
klosnj11
Nice robert...nic e .
very original and emotional; you get a good story out of each piece-like peter and the wolf
He doesnt look anything like CS Lewis...
Mr. Prokofiev bears a remarkable resemblance to the English literary critic/autho r / t h e o l o g i a n C.S. Lewis. That's of no particular significance , just a casual observation.
bonnieballet
I've danced and choreographe d to a number of Prokofiev's pieces, especially excerpts from the Stoneflower Ballet. Have also used Peter & the Wolf in a number of children's performances . I really love his music.
dark and pensive... Prokofiev is a master
Prokofiev has a wonderful collection of piano miniatures.. . I am just ashamed to say I can not remember the name of them. Definitely worth looking for, check out Amazon.
An amazing composer, I have yet to play his music, and I am searching desperately for copies of his piano music. In doing so, I hope to find a solo for next year. His music is just...beaut i f u l , awe-inspirin g , and exciting.
........neve r heard of this russky...... . . b u t love it!! THANKS pandora..... . . . y o u ' r e helping another goober grow!

robert
Prokofiev's piano music is so... radical. I'd strongly suggest it. Also, "Romeo and Juliet" and "Peter and the Wolf" are amazing.By the way, look for his actual piano sonatas. "Prokofiev: Piano Music" are renditions of pieces from his ballets for piano. One of my favorite sonatas is his 7th.
kepelt
One of my Top Two favourites.
