Savatage formed in Florida in 1978 as Avatar, led by brothers Jon (vocals) and Criss (guitar) Oliva. They changed their name to Savatage in 1983, pursuing a strongly Judas Priest- and Iron Maiden-influenced style of metal. Their other members included Steve "Doc" Wacholz (drums) and Keith Collins (bass), who was later replaced by Johnny Lee Middleton. They meandered between basic metal and more commercial fare before adding second guitarist Chris Caffery and hitting their stride in 1990 with Gutter Ballet. The band showed a flair for intense, melodic hard rock, dramatic balladry, and elaborate, operatic concepts, which they pursued over their next few albums. Criss Oliva was killed in an auto accident in 1993; he was replaced by former Testament guitarist Alex Skolnick, but the new lineup was ill-received. Dead Winter Dead followed in 1995, and after a three-year absence Savatage returned with The Wake of Magellan. The Final Bell appeared in 2000, and Poets and Madmen followed it in 2001. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
Hey Ihme67nj60, I did the same to that album. That vinyl skips all over the place! Hearing this, Dungeons, Sirens, reminds me of good 'ol times. Just recently heard Jon Oliva's Pain - check it if u haven't already! Back to the Savatage!
lame bio to one of my favs ever. some mentioned sirens, tells me you are old school. 1st concert I ever went to was savatage megedeth dio. here's some titles for ya.....the dungeons are calling. sirens. power of the night. fight for the rock. fall of the mountain king. gutter ballet. streets (which IS THE BEST concept album EVER, sorry no contest, cant argue)
@mltbran... Chris Caffery was in Savatage on the Hall Of The Mountain King tour, though he played off stage. He was also credited on the Gutter Ballet CD but did not play on it. He didn't record on Streets, but was featured in the videos. He then left the band but returned as a full time member on Dead Winter Dead. Alex Skolnick bearly played on Handful of Rain maybe a few solos and that's it, the rest was Jon Oliva. @Logan7566 Jeff Plate, while one of my favorite drummers has absolutely ZERO so
how can it be that no one mentions Jeff Plate who wrote Dead Winter Dead.... One of the main contributors to TSO's existence!!!!

I cant believe the pathetic bio they have for this band. For as long as they created astounding music, and then bled into TSO that bio should be a full page. Musically they were pretty much on another level.
Gutter Ballet was my introduction to Savatage back in early 90's, when Z rock used to play them on the radio. Bought just about everything they put out since.
Yeah, that bio sucked a**. Not only didn't mention Zak or TSO, but left out Al Pitrelli, AND the pivotal role of Paul O'Neill in the change of Savatage's direction.
I used to think this was gay as hell. Till this old timer I used to work with set me straight on a lot of 80's bands. From a guitarist standpoint the 80's were a glorious time!!!!!
Talk about a messed up bio! He's got all his facts mixed up and the timeline confused. They didn't add Chris Caffrey until after Criss Oliva was killed and Alex Skoinick came and went for one album. Also, how do you fail to mention Zak Stevens? Trans-Siberia Orchestra, hello? How many people know that their first hit was actually a Savatage song featured on Dead Winter Dead? I could've written a better bio than this one!

WOW!! Talk about back in the day. :-D Loved watching them rock the Brass Mug or the Sunset Club @ the corner of Sin and Inequity in Tampa. Miss ya Criss!!! D.

New lineup ill received...??!!! Yeah, right. Well, I received them well, as did scores of others! :) For those not in the know, check out Jon Oliva's Pain...he's got 3 albums now and they're all worth a listen. And, as an aside, Jon sings (albeit briefly) on Kamelot's last album 'Poetry for the Poisoned. Savatage Legion!
one of the best ever ,i miss the days of watching them in a small bar in brandon that was an unsurpassed show

Because pop is popular...sadly all the people want to hear either rap, Britney Spears-esque music, or soft rock sounds. I have tried to request both Sav and TSO at my local hard rock station. They said they didn't have any. That was the last day I listened to the station.
emba.emni
Thank god they still play as TSO!

Most. Awesome. Band. Ever. Why can't we get this on real radio instead of that pop crap?

True that whitekight, true that.

WTH? Where's the Sirens album Pandora? *fistshake*
Love this band! I grew up listening to Edge of Thorns, Gutter Ballet, etc. Alot of bands are underappreciated, its mainly because a new generation of music comes out. I am only 21...but I'd rather listen to them any day then Bieber, Cryus, etc. Also, get your facts right...Criss Olivia passed away in 1993 which was after most of their albums. RIP Criss you were awesome at playing the guitar!
One of my all time favorites. I remember going to see them when they were Avatar in Clearwater, early 80's. They always put on a great show, even now with the TSO name!!!
No mention of Trans Siberian Orchestra in bio. After they changed their name to that, they re-released Christmaas Eve Sarajevo on the radio under TRO. But the song was on Dead Winter Dead; album released by Savatage. I wrote an essay on how soon after the war in Sarajevo the album came out; and how it reflected the reality of the cellist in the town square and Yoyo Ma's tribute to him; and how the city was once again instumental in war, the last one being WW I.
This band's history Reads like a soap opera, The Sad truth is as great as Savatage is its gona go down in history books a lot like Y&T and Hammerfall Great bands that are under rated
This band kicks, even now. It's too bad that they didn't really get the notoriety until they started playing as TSO. I agree with Jon Oliva: the only thing that held down Savatage was their name. TSO is awesome, and so is old Savatage. I absolutely LOVE Gutter Ballet. That's the song that made me a lifelong Savatage fan.
