It doesn't matter if it is an opening for catholic masses of the dead. It is what it is, it is uplifting. Masses of the Dead should be uplifting, it's a very profound thing.
It seems that most comments are aimed at impressing the reader with the writers knowledge of Latin...such pride is not becoming.

Talat speaks of the uplifting aspects of this hymn. I'm not sure Talat knows that this is the opening of other old Catholic Mass of the Dead. The translation of the opening Latin is roughly Grant Eternal Peace, O Lord and let Perpetual Light shine on them. The bell in the background is the muffled funeral clapper of a bell. More subdued than the regular Mass of Celebration in the Old Latin Rites.

They chant well, but their lack of familiarity with the basic elements of pronunciation is a distraction.
This piece is fied with such clear, uplifting, soaring intonations that encourage the spirit and soothe the soul. These lines of plainsong evoke a reverance and awe for the beauty that the sound of human song can give.
