Italian composer Ruggero Leoncavallo (1857-1919) is remembered almost exclusively for his 1892 one-act opera I Pagliacci, modeled on the verismo style of Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana. The double bill of those works has remained at the core of the operatic repertoire. Although Leoncavallo produced many other operas, the only other one to achieve some measure of lasting success was his 1897 version of La bohème, although its popularity was soundly eclipsed by Puccini's La bohème, one of the most beloved operas of all time. He served as his own librettist, and he collaborated on the libretto for Puccini's Manon Lescaut. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi
