Singer/songwriter Rosie Thomas has been shaping her sweet, delicate song stylings since her early childhood, but she made a name for herself when she joined Motor City dream pop band Velour 100. Thomas sang and toured with the band during the late '90s before jumping ship for a solo career. Mixing up the folk-pop of Joni Mitchell with indie sensibilities, Thomas found herself surrounded by a new scene. She and Damien Jurado dueted on "Wages of Sin" for Sub-Pop's 2001 compilation Badlands: A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska as well as guested on "Parking Lot" on Jurado's Ghost of David. Thomas, however, introduced something more reflective, humorous, and intriguing on her solo debut, When We Were Small (Sub-Pop), in early 2002. When she's not making music, Thomas' comedic alter ego, a bespectacled pizza delivery girl who she's named Sheila, may also appear. Her winning streak continued in late 2003 with the release of her second full-length release, Only with Laughter Can You Win. If Songs Could Be Held followed in 2005. Thomas' song "Faith's Silver Elephant" was included on a compilation disc put together by Toronto's Paper Bag Records the following year. 2006 was also the year that Pitchfork made the dubious claim that Thomas and fellow musician Sufjan Stevens were expecting a child. Thomas later dispelled the claim, citing that it had been meant as an April Fools' Day joke. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, Rovi
hate to be a naysayer here, but syrupy sweet does not equate to talent. Pandora - I'd just like to know how you made the link from Tom Waits (he sings, plays instruments and writes his lyrics too – wow such talent) to this pop star
I had the pleasure of listening / watching her live a few times over the past 5 years; the first time was at a small (about 20 of us) gig she played in an independent record shop downtown Detroit -- was delightful.....a true gift, per se.
Loved her voice in high school as a fellow choir singer and still continue to be impressed with her song writing. Thank you for bringing your music to the world, Rosie!!
what a beautiful voice you have. It's so unquie. This song is beautiful.

Rosie Thomas...I went to a two year college with you many moons ago...What a lively, beautiful girl! Fast forward a few years to hear you were surfacing as a successful indie artist...Yay! Rosie, Farewell makes me weep. literally. Oh the depth of a break. Thank you for drawing one more shattering out of me with your gorgeous lyrics and musical composition. I heart you. Sarah PS And can I just say Pandora rocks! It's borderline how creepy they know what I love even before I do...love it.

A friend of mine at work got me turned on to Rosie and I am hooked big time. I would love to see her in concert. What a sound !!!!!!!
"If Songs Could Be Held" is an amazing album. Great from start to finish. Rosie Thomas is one of those solid, truly talented, artists that the mainstream music scene has totally passed up in favor of "cotton candy" musicians like Britney Spears, sweet sounding with absolutely NO substance... I wish the radio would pick up and play more of artists like Rosie Thomas.

I agree with you, farmer...there is a lot of Tori Amos in her voice; she also reminds me a little of Alanis Morissette and Sara McLaughlin as well. This is one of the very cool things about Pandora...it introduces us to artists we may have never heard of any other way.

What a different and amazing voice. My favorite female vocalist. Just love this artist.
love "death came and got me" - her vocals blend perfectly with the piano melody. there seems a break in harmonious sound, but fuses with the lyrics and tone of song well. good for those mellow moods!
