born in Brighton, England, composed during the Modern period
English composer Roger Quilter (1877-1953) was educated in Germany and among the British composers known as "The Frankfurt Group." Although he occasionally composed for orchestra, piano, and for chorus, Quilter is remembered as an expert composer of art songs, a genre in which he produced more than 100 works starting in 1900. Among Quilter's best-known settings are "O Mistress Mine" and "Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal" elegant, well-crafted, and emotionally involving songs, distinctively English and gracious to singers. More ambitious Quilter projects, such as the opera Julia (1936), were less successful than his songs almost as a matter of routine. ~ Uncle Dave Lewis , Rovi
