Arnold Schoenberg

September 13, 1874 - July 13, 1951
born in Austria, composed during the Modern period
Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) was an Austrian composer who began his career at the height of late Romanticism yet became one of the most dominant and controversial figures of modern music. Schoenberg's early style was lush and highly chromatic, but still recognizably tonal, and Verklärte Nacht represents this youthful phase. By 1909, Schoenberg had begun composing angular, atonal works, among which the Five Pieces for orchestra and Pierrot Lunaire are expressionistic landmarks. By the 1920s, Schoenberg had settled on the twelve-tone method or dodecaphony that systematized atonal music and influenced many composers, especially Berg, Webern, and their followers. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi

Who was this soloist?
The Musette from Suite No. 25 is for everyone who thinks Schoenberg's twelve-tone music is arbitrary and unmusical. You can hear the form and the harmonic colors whether you understand the system or not.
Harmonic language and feeling are utterly different things. A great composer can express profound emotion no matter what kinds of harmonies they choose, and Schoenberg's intelligence does not diminish his expressivene s s in any way. No accident that he's sometimes classified as expressionis t and even painted German expressionis t portraits of himself.
Schoenberg's Verklarte Nacht is the heir to Richard Strauss's Tod und Verklarung.

All too often Schoenberg is performed as well as the music requires, but when it is performed by perceptive musicians it becomes clear what an imaginative and talented composer he was. He may never be appreciated by the general classical audience or played with insight by many performers and ensembles, but that does not in any way diminish his creative genius!
All music comes from the heart and spirit.
I can hear rhe work of many 20th century composers in this work, it must have been played by quite a few other 20th century composers. I am very happy to have found it.
This composer composed more with his mind than his heart, especially when writing outside of tonality. No one can doubt this. It may sound like an insult, but it isn't. It is just a fundamentall y different approach to composition (and to listening). Academic music is meant for the academic musical world, which is why most people aren't as familiar with it, along with the arrogance associated with SOME avant-garde composers and advocates at the beginning of the last century. There you go.
hmmmm. was BORN on the 13th as weLL.
TOO freaKY!
the triskaidekap h o b i c composer died on the 13th?
funky.
paved the way for many: webern, antheil, bartok...
Love Schoenberg, especially his Opera Moses und Aaron.
Schoenberg was the greatest early and mid-twentiet h century composer.
Eerie and storytelling sound. It is like the soundtrack of life...Him and Stravinski were genius
