Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) was an Austrian composer who began his career at the height of late Romanticism yet became one of the most dominant and controversial figures of modern music. Schoenberg's early style was lush and highly chromatic, but still recognizably tonal, and Verklärte Nacht represents this youthful phase. By 1909, Schoenberg had begun composing angular, atonal works, among which the Five Pieces for orchestra and Pierrot Lunaire are expressionistic landmarks. By the 1920s, Schoenberg had settled on the twelve-tone method or dodecaphony that systematized atonal music and influenced many composers, especially Berg, Webern, and their followers. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi
