Robben Ford has had a diverse career. He taught himself guitar when he was 13 and considered his first influence to be Mike Bloomfield. At 18 he moved to San Francisco to form the Charles Ford Band (named after his father, who was also a guitarist) and was soon hired to play with Charlie Musselwhite for nine months. In 1971, the Charles Ford Blues Band was re-formed and recorded for Arhoolie in early 1972. Ford played with Jimmy Witherspoon (1972-1973), the L.A. Express with Tom Scott (1974), George Harrison, and Joni Mitchell. In 1977 he was a founding member of the Yellowjackets, which he stayed with until 1983, simultaneously having a solo career and working as a session guitarist. In 1986, Ford toured with Miles Davis and had two separate periods (1985 and 1987) with Sadao Watanabe, but he really seemed to find himself in 1992 when he returned to his roots: the blues. Ford formed a new group, the Blue Line, and subsequently recorded a couple of blues-rock dates for Stretch that are among the finest of his career. In 1999, he released Sunrise on Rhino and Supernatural on Blue Thumb. Ford signed to the Concord Jazz label in 2002 and released Blue Moon that same year, followed by Keep on Running in 2003 and Truth in 2007. That same year, he was a billed special guest on Larry Carlton's Live in Tokyo. He followed this with the predominantly live Soul on Ten in 2009. In 2013, Ford began his label association with Provogue, and issued the studio album Bringing It Back Home, comprised mostly of blues and R&B covers played by an all-star band. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
Ford's jazz/ blues is not only great listening, he is technically so good. His technique is precise and accurate. He and Larry Carlton are my favorite guitarists.
I had forgotten about Robben. Had listened to him when I was in SoCal. Just recently rediscovered him here on Pandora and he is my go to station!

Also...saw him with the Ford Brothers in Ukiah several years ago. They did a free concert for the local radio station in their home town. How sweet it was.
His mix of Jazz and Blues is like a great New Orleans Gumbo. Robben Ford is a great Chef my all time favorite. Thanks

He doesn't sound like anyone that I have ever heard of and that to me is very refreshing. I love the way this man plays and I hope that he continues for many, many more years to come.

What a great, innovative, refreshing guitarist. His blues/jazz style, especially when playing with another great--Larry Carlton--is fantastic.

I first heard Robben Ford in the 70's. I recorded a live broadcast of the Playboy jazz fest somewhere in Socal. From that I got turned onto the Yellow Jackets. Saw him live at a little club in Reseda, Ca. Blew us away!
I didn't discover him until the 90's as well and boy what a wonderful player. I think he has some roots in the Ukiah California area and he occasionally plays there, I live about 40 min from there so I get a treat once in a while.
I didn't find out about him until the '90s, but I sure enjoy his take on the blues. Great guitarist!

When you get tired of listening to straight up blues, put on your headphones and put on Robben Ford for a breath of fresh air. If you get the chance to see him, treat yourself. You'll be glad you did.
God here i was thinking i was the only one that new him. Sad to say never seen him, been a fan for many years.

My first introduction to Robben was in about '75 - brother Rick brought "The Inside Story" home on USAF leave. I think on a reel to reel tape. Glad to have known a great tenor player who always liked Tom Scott so eventually found the LA Express and the rest is a big part of my history. Thanks guy's. By the way to Karen Johns posted below...I've seen him 4 times here in Portland, Oregon. Holy crap, I was so close one night he busted me playin' air guitar with him and got a big smile out of him. H
Robben never leaves anything on the shelf. Seen him 15-20 times and he always delivers. Great intonation , and phrasing on the licks. He is among my favorite players...Rick
I really wish Pandora would include Jing CHI! Great trio with Yellow Jacket's bass player Jimmy Haslip and Vinnie Colaiuta on drums. Ultimate psychadelic Jazz Power tiro!
Saw Robben playing with Tom Scott back in the 70's when they were opening for George Benson. I remember going to work the next day and talking to people who had been at the show. Nobody knew who he was, but everybody raving about the great young guitar player we'd seen. None of us knew what he would become.

No mention of "Talk to your daughter? Top notch stuff! MNL
My wife and I had the pleasure to see Robben and Larry Carlton at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee WI earlier this year. Their show just blew us away!! Larry's jazz style and Robben's blues style complimented each other like fine wine and cheese. We had second row seats and got to meet Robben and Larry after the show.
Robben Ford is one of the best all around players in the world.
He can play anything...from Wes Montgomery to full on rock !!
If I could play like anybody in the world...it would be him.
I`d love to make a guitar for him !!
