The long-lived New York-based heavy metal band Riot was formed in 1976 by guitarist/songwriter Mark Reale, who recruited vocalist Guy Speranza, guitarist L.A. Kouvaris, bassist Jimmy Iommi, and drummer Peter Bitelli. After debuting in 1977 with Rock City, Kouvaris was replaced by guitarist Rick Ventura, and the group returned in 1979 with Narita; Iommi and Bitelli were the next to exit, and with the recruitment of bassist Kip Leming and drummer Sandy Slavin, the classic Riot lineup was in place. Tours in support of AC/DC and Molly Hatchet followed before the release of 1981's Fire Down Under, considered by fans to represent the band's creative peak; with the departure of frontman Speranza, however, Riot suffered a major blow from which they never fully recovered. New vocalist Rhett Forrester made his debut on 1982's Restless Breed, but after issuing Made in America a year later, Reale announced the band's dissolution; after forming a new group, the Mark Reale Project, he re-formed Riot in late 1986 with vocalist Tony Moore, bassist Don VanStavern, and drummer Bobby Jarzombek. The new lineup's comeback effort, Thundersteel, appeared in 1988, followed two years later by The Privilege of Power; after adding second guitarist Mike Flyntz and replacing VanStavern with bassist Pete Perez, the group toured the Far East, yielding the LP Riot in Japan Live!!! in 1992. After 1994's Night Breaker, Jarzombek quit Riot, and was replaced by drummer John Macaluso for 1996's The Brethren of the Long House; Jarzombek returned to the fold to release Inishmore two years later, with Sons of Society following in 1999. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
Fire Down Under was totally it....every song on that album stands on it's own. I have all their vinyl and have always been a huge fan...they made their mark in metal !!!!
Riot had 5-6 great albums between Priveledge of Power and the new Immortal Soul. Mike Dimeo singing who was later in Masterplan and a great Aussie band called Illium

First version of this band is the best. Loved the almost punk fresh sound they had to good ol' rock n roll.
for me...just OK. don't get eddie trunk's hard-on for them. anyone however who would walk out on a rush concert can no longer post anyy opinion on anything because their credibilty is gone forever.

This band will be more appreciated as time goes on, people tend to find great things after the fact. The members and/or genre may be dead today, but the METAL lives on FOREVER!! Rock on metal brotherhood!! Rock on/....
Iv been a RIOT rocker since the 70s there one of history's baddest ROCK_N_ROLL HEAVY METAL bands ever.ROCK ON GUYS

Rock City, Narita. Great records. I don't consider the Privelege of Power and Thunder Steel true Riot records. That's like calling Motley Crue Motley Crue with only Nikki Sixx as an original member. That said, Riot was a great rock band and not a metal band. Saw them in 77' and 78' and they were awesome.

RIOT is by far one of the most under-rated metal bands of all time. They should've been huge, and it's always puzzled me as to why they never hit the bigtime. While "Fire Down Under" seems to be their peak of popularity, hardcore RIOT fans like myself still consider the faster-paced, high-pitched vocal'd Thundrsteel album as an equal. The more experimental mix and samplings of "Priviledge of Power" (including bringing in the horn section of Tower of Power, on some songs) as one of the most over-
Great under looked metal band.... Right now the Thundersteel/Privilege of Power Lineup is reforming for some shows in Sweden and Spain only so far...hopefully the band can make a good comeback effort and tour more in the states.
I have every album up there,...and MORE. I wish there were more albums of the 70's and 80's genre to acquire. Man, these boys R_O_C_K!! If you are a guitar fan and you haven't heard these guys...., you ARE in for a treat. Check out 'Overdrive', 'Warrior', and 'Black Leather and Glittering Steel'.
"Killer" keeps coming up on my Pandora channel and it ROCKS! It is very Extreme-ish with the "hard rock with funky horns" bent. What is the rest of their stuff like?
Unfortunately both Guy Speranza and Rhett Forester have passed away. So any hopes of an original lineup reunion are hopeless. The first three Riot albums Kick Total A** and I could never understand why they never made it bigger. Guy Speranza was one of the best hard rock/metal vocalists. A very underated singer. Fire Down Under is still one of my all time favourite albums.

All these years later, I'm still wondering the same thing.
