Ringo Starr

Ringo Starr, born Richard Starkey, was the drummer in the Beatles from 1962 to 1970 and thus became one of the most famous musicians of the '60s. Though the least prominent member of the quartet, he distinguished himself as an occasional singer of good-natured material and as an actor. Upon the group's split, Starr went solo with two novelty projects: the first, an album called Sentimental Journey, found him covering pre-rock standards, and the second, Beaucoups of Blues, was a country music collection. Starr then scored Top Ten hits with two non-album singles, "It Don't Come Easy" in 1971 and "Back Off Boogaloo" in 1972. He paired with producer Richard Perry one year later and, with assistance from the three other ex-Beatles, made Ringo, which featured two number one hits, "Photograph" and "You're Sixteen." "Oh My My," a Top Ten hit, was also included, and those three singles helped push the album to platinum certification. Almost as successful was the 1974 follow-up, Goodnight Vienna, which featured the hits "Only You" and "No No Song."

Starr continued to issue widely released albums through 1981, though with diminishing success. His 1983 effort, Old Wave, did not find a U.S. distributor. Starr was also suffering from the excesses of his lifestyle, but by the late '80s he had cleaned up his act and put together a new lineup, the "All-Starr Band," which toured in 1989. Featuring a rotating lineup of high-profile musicians -- Joe Walsh, Nils Lofgren, and Levon Helm among them -- the "All-Starr Band" went on to tour multiple times during the following two decades. Ringo Starr never forgot about his solo career, however, and in 1992 he signed to Private Music and released a new studio album, Time Takes Time. He also made something of a comeback with 1998's Vertical Man -- his first album for Mercury -- which was released after the surprising success of the Beatles' Anthology project. The world had seemingly rediscovered its love for the Beatles, and Vertical Man cracked the charts in Europe and America, making it Ringo's most commercially successful record since the 1970s. A live album culled from his performance on the VH1 Storytellers series was also released in 1998.

Starr's first seasonal effort, I Wanna Be Santa Claus, appeared in 1999. Two studio records appeared during the early 2000s: Ringorama from 2003 and Choose Love from 2005, both of them released by the Koch label. In 2006 he made a guest appearance on Jerry Lee Lewis' album Last Man Standing and toured with another edition of his All-Starr Band, this time featuring Sheila E. and Edgar Winter. The 2007 release PBS Soundstage Live featured a show recorded two years earlier in Chicago. Also released in 2007 was the definitive Photograph: The Very Best of Ringo Starr.

Ringo toured with his tenth All-Starr ensemble in 2008, populating the lineup with past participants (Colin Hay, Billy Squier, Hamish Stuart, and Edgar Winter) and new additions (keyboardist Gary Wright and drummer Gregg Bissonette). A Surround Sound collection of tracks from Ringorama and Choose Love, 5.1: The Surround Sound Collection, appeared in 2008, as did his 14th studio album, Liverpool 8. Two years later, he returned with Y Not, whose lead single found Ringo duetting with former bandmate Paul McCartney. Ringo 2012, his 17th solo album, appeared in 2012, and featured guest spots from Charlie Haden, Van Dyke Parks, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Dave Stewart, Benmont Tench, Joe Walsh, Don Was, and Edgar Winter, among others. ~ William Ruhlmann & J. With A Little Help From My Friends* not With A Little Hope From My Friends
I guess lulu.gilman must be pretty young... They don't realize he was a Beatle...? Geez I feel old! In spite of the massive talents of John & Paul, I really believe It Don't Come Easy was the best post-Beatles , tap your foot, AM radio style single that any of them did. (And George's All Thing Must Pass was the best album!) They were not the Fab Three. Ringo deserves his kudos. His drums on Strawberry Fields Forever are as brilliant as anyone's best.
lulu.gilman
@Phil Grover, I think Ringo doesn't have as much likes as his former bandmates because the other Beatles were more popular than he was. He deserves just as much credit as they do because he provided drumming to their music, but for some people, the only reason they've heard of him is because the way his name stands out. They don't realize he was a Beatle, but once they do, they'll love him even more.
I think Ringo doesn't get the credit that he deserves. Love his music and his personality
Why does ringo starr have so few likes compared to the other beatles?

Saw Ringo in Monaco last summer. Great guy. He said he had a bad problem of telling people to f**k off and eat s**t . He said he went to a therapist and the therapist have the advice if you want to tell a fan f**k off a**hole then just say Peace and Love
Ringo's solo albums over the last 30 years (after All Things Must Pass) have been the best post Beatles body of work than any other member of the group. Never Without You is a masterpiece. Peace & Love to all
My fav beatle!
GOD bless Ringo, and I hope we haven't heard the last of him !!!
Major inspiration to the rock masses, his music will live on until this world ends! And I'm pretty sure his music will rock on to mars!
If you listen to Ringo here on this album Concert for Bangladesh he forgets part of the words to the song Don't Come Easy....It is funny...
He wants to be a Powerpuff Girl btw

I've always loved Ringo. No one can play the drums as well as he does. Somehow, he makes them part of the melody, not just background percussion.

Watch the Beatles cartoons and tell me if that reminds you of Ringo...
Ringo really rocks.

Ringo will always be my favourite Beatles' member, not saying that George, John, and Paul aren't great, also. When he dies, I will cry for peobably a month straight. Cliché --- up next....... Live long, and prosper, Ringo!
Ringo will always be my favorite
Can't believe it's been a year since I saw Ringo and his Allstar Band, wow what a show!!!!! Love Ringo so much!!! I am so happy I got to see him at the Fabulous Fox in Atlanta, much love to Ringo Starr!!!!
but still, ringo is great narrator to one of my favorite/pas t favorite shows and a MARVELOUS member of the beatles* my favorite.
@ekmpark Yes! Great Musician,Sin g e r , a n d Drummer, but also was Narrator of TTTE in the UK/US 1984-1986. If you think i am crazy for even mentioning thomas, I am not mentioning the junk they put on the tube today, the good storylines Before season 5 or 6 or so. (however, sea s o n 17, the one being released seems actually... better, as there is a new narrator (Ringo is still good and so is Carlin and Angelis) and better storylines for once!!! if u think i'm lying, look on youtube and see for yourself!

Ringo, we all love you, tour again if you want proof of that
why didn't Ringo sing more songs ? was he stereotyped as The Drummer ..? I like his singing
Ringo not only a Beatle, and how do you top that.(?) My son years after the Beatles, knows him as his favorite conductor on Thomas the Tank Engine. A popular kids show that helped teach cooperation and good civic values. Great guy!
And I said No, no, no, I don't *sniff* no more. x3 Oh, Ringo.
he's awesome
Ringo Starr is the most amazing drummer ever,beatles , i n solo,includi n g his voice,Ringo Is AMAZING!!!
They all made each other great
Thank
Ringo
Paul
George
John
iris-rain, i couldn't agree more. He and George really do deserve more credit than they get.
I think he should get more credit .
Ringo is easily one of the five most influential drummers of the rock era. To dismiss him is ignorant. He was a master of the drum fill (listen to Something, for example) as well as exotic rhythms (such as in Tomorrow Never Knows or Ticket to Ride). Harrison said Ringo had the best backbeat in rock, and Keith Moon said he was the best drummer of his generation.
I can't tell what is yours and what is mine .....a little help from my friend ...a nice piece of phrase... good job Ringo Starrrrrrrrr r r r
LISTEN TO THE BEATLES SONG RAIN AND TELL ME WHO WAS THE BEST DRUMMER THE BEATLES COULD EVER HAVE.
i always felt bad, there were 4 Beatles, not 3! i hope he knows how many millions of people love him and and just think he's a great drummer! love you Ringo
I f**king love Ringo. He's my favorite Beatle. All of them are awesome. But Ringo has a special place in my heart. Even when I was a little girl watching Yellow Submarine over and over with my older brothers on our VHS, I still loved Ringo the best. I love ya, Rings!
Much love for Ringo
For those of you of Ringo fans who might not be aware, his Old Wave from the 1980's is a tremendous album. The fact that it never got wider distribution or airplay is a crying shame. If you haven't discovered it, you're in for a treat. I treasure my vinyl copy. Wish they had it on Pandora.
LOVE RINGO!!!! :) :) :) :)
mewalsh64, re: getting Pandora to play Ringo on your Beatles station, I'd suggest adding a few of your favorite Ringo tracks as song seeds. And, of course, if you haven't already done so, putting him in there as an artist seed. Good luck! Peace and love! :)

My nickname in grade school was Ringo so I wore 10 rings.
