Rich Mullins And A Ragamuffin Band

Rich Mullins was many things to the CCM community: a beloved performer nominated for 12 Dove Awards, an expert on several instruments (including hammered dulcimer, piano, and guitar), and a very successful songwriter, responsible for one of the most popular contemporary praise songs in existence, "Awesome God." Born in 1955 in Richmond, IN, he began playing piano at the age of four, and gradually became proficient on guitar and dulcimer as well. In 1974, he began studying at Cincinnati Bible College, where he wrote praise songs and often performed on acoustic guitar. As part of Zion Ministries, Mullins toured the country and led praise & worship meetings at many retreats. One such meeting, in Nashville, got him signed to a publishing deal by Reunion Records, and Amy Grant recorded his "Sing Your Praise to the Lord" for her 1982 album Age to Age. Just two years later, he signed a recording contract with Reunion as well.

Even early in his career, Mullins' gift for incisive lyrics and folky, Celtic music revealed itself, as on his 1986 self-titled album and the follow-ups Pictures in the Sky and Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth. Though he moved to Kansas in 1988 to study music education at Friends University, Mullins continued to record steadily during the late '80s and early '90s, and also released two volumes of a quasi-song cycle entitled The World as Best as I Remember It. He began to get involved with relief organizations after graduation from Friends, and spent time in the American Southwest teaching music to children on a Navajo reservation. He had recorded two collections of new songs plus another compilation before he was tragically killed in an Illinois car accident in September 1997. The Jesus Record was released posthumously the following year and Here in America, a collection of live recordings and demos accompanied by a DVD, was released in 2003. ~ John Bush, Rovi

I watched Ragamuffin last night as well on Netflix. Loved to learn more about the man behind these beautiful praise songs I have listened to and have sung over the years.

Watched Ragamuffin last night. A very moving story.
My wife and I watched Ragamuffin this weekend and cried several times throughout the movie for all sorts of emotional connections to his life story.
"I am a Christian, not because someone explained the nuts and bolts of Christianity , but because there were people willing to be nuts and bolts."
I pray his life effects our life so much that God can do wild and crazy things through us.
I just saw the Ragamuffin movie on netflix! Wow, I feel like we would have hung out, I find myself more interested in listening to
Christian Music now, he makes it all make more sense, he was so real!
I just watched the movie Ragamuffin, about him and his life. I can so relate with him as I am sure many of us can. His disdain for the whole Christian thing was ahead of its' time...one person wrote about him saying farhtest from a saint and closest to a true beleiver. I agree, I think he so longed for that real surrender relationship with Jesus and longed to deeply know and serve his Savior without the dos and don'ts that Christrian city wanted him to abide by. God bless him and pray He is with
Love "Surely God Is With Us". Hope to sing it with you in heaven someday, Rich! (And with God too).

I've been listening to Rich Mullins since seeing him on the Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth tour when I was in High School. I was captivated then and his music quickly became my solace through those turbulent years. He sang words that I ached to express, but couldn't at the time. I still listen to him quite often and also have some DVDs of concerts that I like to watch sometimes. His music always points my heart back to God - that is his legacy.
He keeps me hanging on.I hope I see Rich in Heaven!I know he is with God.What a blessing!!Ri c h God blessed us all with your voice and your compassion,y o u r true love and faith in God and others! We love you Rich!!
Totally on the money. PRAISES TO GOD
Rich Mullins was a breathe of fresh air in this stale old world. Loved his music, and truly believe he was inspired of God. I can just imagine the time he is having in heaven. His music when straight to the soul. Never met him here, but plan to met him in heaven.
I saw him as a teenager before I realized who Christ was to be in my life. Artist come and go but this is stuff of heaven. Real music. For we are broken and need this news...so thank full for this music...
What a blessing and privilege to see and hear him in person in Wichita, Ks. His love for God and God`s people was so obvious, as was his burden for the Navajo, who very rarely would allow a person not in their clture to teach music to their children, never mind live on the rez as Rich did. He went home like Elijah shortly after we saw him. A candle-light tribute/memo r i a l was attended by 1000s in the WSU stadium. His Awesome God was part of the background music during the planetarium program that

When I became a christian in 1995 it was Rich Mullins songs I would listen to as I would go to and from work.Awesome God, Sing Praises to His Name, I could name them all but he touched my heart. I was actually singing along to one of his songs in a bookstore in Terre Haute the weekend he passed and one of his relatives walked up. Unfortunatel y I wasn't aware of his death and they told me. One little girl said he was her uncle and I told them how he had touched me and my family. My son use to lov
As a missionary for many years in Central America, Rich's music inspired so many different cultures beyond the US. It is hard to imagine how far his reach has gone with his music, lyrics and love for God's people and creation. I agree with ragamuffin83 , that you seldom hear an artist sing or write about life the way Rich did. I think that the Jesus Record is my favorite. The raw recordings. We were in the performing arts as an outreach and his music was perfect for many of the events we did.

So many times we listen to an artist for a while and then forget them. Rich Mullins is someone I keep returning to though. I've gone months without hearing him, and then I'll just need to hear "Hard to Get" or "Crying out Your Name" or something. Legacy, Liturgy is probably my favorite. He had such poetry in his music and such a deep appreciation for God revealed in nature as you don't often see in Christian music. It's hard to believe he's been gone so long.

I too miss Rich Mullins and was heartbroken when he passed away. But glad for him... it was amazing the quantity of songs, now that we look back, that point to his longing to be in heaven. - The only artist I have found who really seems to have the same qualities/sp i r i t is Andrew Peterson (who interestingl y alludes to Rich in at least one song, and wrote one about him as well). He's a kindred spirit to Rich, so check him out.

I agree with these comments. I desperately miss him. He had a beautiful heart and soul. His music still touches me today. He never understood what his music ment to people. I do know that he was ready and did "long for his home."

Ditto to the last two comments! His music brings me closer to God.

I miss him as well and know that he could have done so much more on this earth. But our God is in control...I have never felt the same way inside as I do when I hear his music...make s me feel so in touch and closer in my worship.

Rich Mullins was a prophet and a beautiful soul because he allowed Jesus to transform him. I miss him so very much and never tire of his messages to us.
Rich's music so often moves me to tears, as his lyrics and the music combined are used of God to touch my soul. I often ponder the reason(s) God would take him so early... but my finite mind doesn't come up with any answers. That's okay, I still trust my Heavenly Father to know what's best and right. But I agree - I miss him too. I look forward to fellowshippi n g with him over there.
Rich is my all time favorite songwriter and I miss hearing new music from him. No one else could say what needed to be said quite like Rich could.
